    Weird Gravity Measurements

I need some help diagnosing a strange gravity measurement. My pre-boil gravity reading today was 1.052 for 7 gallons. My post boil, right-before-pitching-yeast gravity was 1.050 for 5.5 gallons. I know This can't possibly be right because gravity readings should go up as you boil off water...

Any reason I can't pitch washed yeast without making a starter?

I've been reading washed yeast/starter threads for awhile and it seems that people in general recommend making a starter with washed yeast even if you have enough viable yeast to begin with. The reason I'm curious is that I don't brew that often and have no need for a bunch of mason jars of...

How much of washed yeast to use in next batch?

I washed yeast for the first time on my last batch and I'd like to try and use it for my next one. I've read that people usually split the washed yeast into several mason jars. Then they'll make a starter with one of the mason jars. However, I just have it all in one growler. If I used the...

Starch Conversion but Still Low Mash Efficiency?

I have a couple AG batches under my belt and have been doing tons of research. I have been getting very low efficiencies (50-55%). I recently got my Ward water test and used Bru'n Water to get the right chemicals for my brew (My water had been WAY too alkaline). I was hoping today would be...

I must have miscalculated something and I have more wort in my mash tun than I can fit in my brew pot. Should I add the remaining liquid as some of the wort boils off? Or should I just forget about it? Thanks

    does incandescent light hurt fermentation?

So everything was going great with my batch last night until I woke up this morning to change water bottles in my swamp cooler and realized I had left the light on in the basement for 12 hours... There is no sunlight in my basement but it is very bright with incandescent bulbs. Am I screwed?

I don't think my partial mash worked

Long time lurker, first time poster. Advice in these forums has been tremendously helpful so far so I'm hoping for more. I've brewed three extract/specialty grain batches so far and decided to do my first partial mash today. I used Brewer's Friend as my recipe calculator and with a...
