    OG sample difference

Yesterday I brewed a hefe (great recipe I might say) and with a hydrometer reading I got 1.044 at 70 degrees. I left the sample out overnight and now it only reads. 1.033 . How does the sample differentiate that much with no variables taking place?

    Batch Size and Efficiency

Since I started brewing All-Grain I have had some batches will lower efficiency and I think this may be related to me using a batch size of 5 gallons instead of 5.5 gallons(what is actually going in the fermenter) . I know efficiency is related to the amount of sugar in an amount of water. If...

    messed up mash tun lid

After doing a little research I decided to insulate my mash tub lid with expanding foam(great stuff form Home Depot) What A mess this stuff is. I have never used the stuff for its actual application and I have never used it for insulating a mash tun. Will this stiff be toxic to the mash? I...

Poor Efficiency- Maybe a process issue?

Just finished brewing a red ale yesterday, that I was really excited to brew. I have been getting varied brewhouse efficiencies on my last 3 brews but this was just bad, a mere 60.45%. Here's my process: Mashed in with 3.66 gallons of water for 60 minutes. I batch sparged so I drained the...

    Bry-97

So I decided to give danstars bry-97 a try in a red ale that I brewed last week. So far it has been the most finicky yeast that I have used. Took 3 days to start fermenting and was vigorous for another 2. Now nothing. Took a hydrometer and it was at 1.044. The og was 1.055. When do I decide to...

    batch sizes on brew software

Since I started using brewing all-grain I have been using brew 365 and have been getting pretty good results. The last 3 brews I have done my fermenter amounts have been off .5 gallons. I think this is due to the batch size I have always put in what the batch size is at bottling rather then...

    First time yeast starter

Saturday a buddy and me brewed a hefty porter with a high og, 1.079 to be exact. I had previously read on the forums that with a big beer it would be best to rehydrate the yeast before pitching. All went well yeast ballooned up after a half hour. Now it's been 36 hours and nothing. Do I need...

    Beer smith question

I just started experimenting with beer smith and was wondering of the batch size is your final batch size? or The batch size plus what you are losing in the fermenter?

    Pre- boil/ efficency

I have done about 3 A.G. Batches and now Iam finally ready to start dialing in my system. I have had some many calculators tell me different amounts of strike water/sparge water to use, iam not sure that iam going in the right direction. I think this is where my poor efficiency starts. My last...

Adding corn sugar to boost efficiency

Before I read up on the site here I added 2 cups of corn sugar to my fermenter to adjust for a bad O.G. Does it really matter that I didn't boil it in water first to have it better dissolve?

    Forgot stainless steel braid.

Long story short I forgot to put my stainless steel braid back in my mash tun before I mashed. Efficiency came out horrible ( supposed to be 1.060 came out at 1.040) Iam sure that it is because of this this issue, but this seems really far off. I know I saw a table on her to adjust that can...

    Leftover Centennial. What to make?

Have some left over 1.2 ounces of centennial leftover. Looking to make an average american ale. Maybe some late spice additions. Any one have any good suggestions?

    Using fruit extracts cheating

I have always felt like using fruit extracts for the flavor was kind of cheating. It might just be my likeliness for using the freshest and simplest ingredients. I want to make a blueberry stout, but all the threads I look up suggest using extract over fresh. How does everyone sanitize their...

    keggle question

Yesterday I decided that I would start my keggle project and it went great. Now I'am second guessing myself a little. I drilled 1/2 inch hole to adapt the 1/4 inch ball valve that I had bought. It drains a little slow, but thats fine. Anyways if I wanted to upgrade to a larger ball valve, I...

    Freezing hops

I have some hops that I had frozen a couple of months ago and wax wondering if they would still be as fresh if I had used actual fresh hops. Would the a/a still be the same?

    Odd fermenter smell

Yesterday I just got done dry hopping an ipa and was getting ready to bottle. I use a 7 gallon fermenter for 5 gallons so there is a decent amount of head space. When I opened the fermenter I get almost a a strong alcohol smell. This happened on my last batch, and the beer taste fine. I use a...

Left star san in brew pot

I left star San in my aluminum brew pot for a couple of weeks. I just noticed it when I went to brew in Saturday night. The star San left dime sort of slime that was pretty hard to get off and stripped the oxidized layer? Should I be concerned about this? I went and used the pot anyways on sat...

    Stone IPA recipe question

A while ago I found a recipe for a Stone IPA clone. I jotted down the recipe and the hop schedule on my phone. I know this is going to be a big beer, but exactly how big? 13 lbs-2 Row Pale 1/2 lb-Crystal 10 1/2 lb-Crystal 20 1 oz-Magnum(75 min) 1-oz-Centennial-Flame out 2 oz-Dry Hop...

    Hefe priming question

I bottled a batch of orange/rosemary hefeweizen on Thursday and it just occurred to me that that I might have over primed. I added about 1 cup or 8 oz of priming sugar to the bottling bucket with the juice of about 3 oranges that I added to the bucket as well. Is there to much sugar in the...

    7 gallon bucket primary

Is a 7 gallon bucket too large to primary in without going to a secondary? I don't use a secondary unless Iam using fruit or something long that nature. It just occurred to me that using a smaller primary, around 5 gallons would be a better idea.
