    Help identifying potential keg?

Hey guys, I was offered two "keg" looking things from work. They were only used once or twice, and I know what substances they were used for - and they would be fine for beer contact with cleaning/sanitization. They are in practically new condition. Basically just a little dust. My...

    Brew Kettle Opinions

I found a 9 gallon brew kettle/propane burner on craigslist im thinking of buying this weekend for $90. He says it's aluminum. Anyone ever seen one like this? (see attachments) I've never seen a kettle with a wider mouth like that....and don't know if there's any design flaw that might...

Whats on the TV while you drink and look up beer stuff?

If you like cars, humor, and good old fashioned sexism its.great. The older episodes are a little better tho.

Whats on the TV while you drink and look up beer stuff?

Top Gear. Best show on tv. And the BBC version. Not the lame American knock off.

    my new cooler mash tun

I used cpvc, which is what most on the forum have recommended. I think its also called 'schedule 80', and is used for most potable water applications and is for high heat. I suppose there may be a chance for off flavors, but I haven't read of many. Copper probably avoids off flavors, but I'd...

    my new cooler mash tun

Thanks. I kind of thought about that when I did my water run, but by that time I was fed up with the hacksaw and tape measure. I'm sure I will do some tweaking. I saw an example that had a middle cross-pipe, and I'm thinking of bringing the drain off a T from that cross pipe. I think I just...

    my new cooler mash tun

I drilled through the top, but I did three holes for each interval. Figure a few more holes couldn't hurt.

    my new cooler mash tun

Got a little side tracked with this, but finally finished my manifold today. Used 1/2" cpvc and 3/32" drilled holes. Turned out ok. Defintely a learning experience. No leaks anywhere. Max flow rate out was about 0.5 gal/min, so hopefully I don't need more than that. I was kinda bummed...

Just finished my diy 48qt cooler mash tun. Well, almost finished, just have to get the manifold cut and put in. Thanks to all the forums on here that offered the direction!

    I think I need a book!

+1 to this. I like the layout of this book. Almost like a recipe. Makes it easy on brew day when you just want to cover your bases. I also have Palmer, but its pretty wordy, so I use that for when I'm in the mood for technical info and trying to design things.

    my first beer!

Ok so I've had more than a few samples before tonight. But tonight marks two weeks in bottles. Got a great head retention, decent clarity (could see the tv images through the glass), and great taste. All this from extract. It's official. I'm hooked. Now to finish my mash/lauter tun...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

Chemical Engineer at a biopharma manufacturer. NC State c/o 2010. I would agree with the above statements that the experience you have is more valuable than your degree. I've learned 100x more in the past year than I did in 5 years, spending 35k. However, I would disagree with the comment...

    48qt cooler as mash tun

yeah that's what i thought. hmmm...maybe the inside washers don't need to be Fender, just regular 3/4"x2" washers in SS. Those seem to be more reasonably priced.

    48qt cooler as mash tun

So i got my cooler tonight. Stopped by lowes on the way home to get just the parts for the bulkhead fitting/ball valve. I went with the 1/2" sizes, as recommended by the 48qt cooler 'wiki' page. I found all the parts I needed (1/2" nipple, hose barb adapter, ball valve...) One question...
