    Are my grains still good?

The grains smell fine, they smell very good actually(Yum!). I'm mostly concerned about the diastatic power of the malt. Also, as it is my first AG batch, what's a good all purpose water to grain ratio to start out with? I'm planning to do BIAB and the kit has about 10lbs of malt in it.

    Are my grains still good?

I ordered a couple kits from NorthernBrewer around late January this year, and they arrived a couple weeks ago. I just brewed one of the kits first, which was extract, and I was wondering if my AG kit is still good. The grain's already crushed, but while they were at a relative's house, it was...

Ice Concentration, Separation, Refermentation, & Resurrection

@Jester5120: Yeah, I'm doing that right now, but I can only fit one jug at a time so it will take a while to do even the first step. Tip: if your beer refuses to freeze, drop in a tiny piece of ice and it will do the trick. You'll have slush in just a couple of hours. So drop in maybe half a...

Ice Concentration, Separation, Refermentation, & Resurrection

I think you sir just might have saved my mead! I will have to try this. But it will be difficult with 5 gal of the stuff. I just hope that I will have as much luck as you have.

    Yeast that is crossing oceans

I had ordered some beer kits with Wyeast smack packs back in late january and they were shipped to a relative over in the US. Unfortunately, I forgot to mention to them that the yeast needs to be refrigerated, so it sat there in the box waiting to be sent over here to the Philippines for over a...

    Acidic Mead

Maybe. . . but I just took a reading and it says that it is at 1.040. I wanted to get it drier, but the acidity makes the sweetness almost disappear. It's as if I was drinking something at around 1.010 or lower. I'm not saying that it's not good, it's just the acidity that makes it a bit less...

    Acidic Mead

I made a mead last year on around the 20th of december, a one gal batch. It's done fermenting and I racked it off the yeast and onto some old vanilla beans I had laying around for a long time last week and it's really clear. I originally planned to use only 2 beans, but decided to put all three...

Hop Flavor and Aroma Sampler question

I was planning on doing something like that. And could you give me a list of said major hops? I mean how many varieties are there these days? I'd like a concise list of the major hops, please.

Hop Flavor and Aroma Sampler question

Hey I'm pretty new to brewing and I was wondering, what is a good hop smorgasbord for sampling the basic hop characters. What hops are a good all around for a particular flavor and aroma. For example, I know that cascade is a good basic hop for a citrusy character. So that's already on my list...

    Moving an aging mead.

To be honest I have no personal experience, but if it's in a glass carboy then you need to be sure that it is degassed and topped off to the neck with as little air as possible, then it should be fine. I would suggest a solid stopper during transport and the smoothest route possible. The main...

    Help! Skeptical Friends!

Well, I've tried just about everything you suggested already. They said that they needed solid tangible Proof that it is safe to drink. If anyone can suggest what I can do, please tell me.

    Help! Skeptical Friends!

I have a bunch of buddies who I wanna share my homebrew with, BUT! They are really skeptical about it's "safety". Everyone who ever shared their brew with buddies who don't homebrew or even heard of it has encountered this before. And I know what some of you might say. "Hey if they don't want...

    REAL names of yeast strains

Alright, I get your point. I guess I was getting way ahead of myself and got all excited about the idea(happens way more often than I'd like to admit) of being able to get different yeasts locally. I'll try to find a different solution, like making slants/dishes from dry yeasts and make my own...

    REAL names of yeast strains

Well you're right about that, but a long time ago if i remember correctly I stumbled on a yahoo group of Philippine Homebrewers and they talked about trying to get some brewers yeast locally. They mentioned the DOST and that they had brewing specific yeasts and they said that the yeasts were...

Hey, I was just wondering, what are the real scientific names for these particular commercial yeast strains? Wyeast 1728 Scottish Ale Wyeast 1098 British Ale Whitelabs WLP001 California Ale White Labs WLP099 Super High Gravity Ale And I don't want the plain saccharomyces cerevisiae. I'm...

    What mill? And other stuff

Yeah, this old horse has been beaten way too often and you're right, I need to clear some things up so you guys can help. How's the durability on the mills? Has anyone had a mill listed whose rollers/other parts have rusted? (Really humid here) How easy is it to maintain/use? Which of them...

    What mill? And other stuff

Why are people talking about the plate chiller when my real predicament is in what mill to choose? :off:

    What mill? And other stuff

why would a immersion chiller be better? The water temps here never get lower than 70 in the hot season and I hate having to waste so much water.
