    John Harvard's in Boston

I'm not sure how I feel about this place--I was REALLY excited to go there, since I've heard a ton of great stuff about it. The place looked great, but of the 5 beers (kolsch, APA, IPA, nut brown ale, stout) on tap, they were out of the brown ale and the stout. Fine, I asked what they had on...

    SA Mayflower Golden?

Just had a glass of this when I was visiting Plymouth Plantation. Anyone know anything about it (aside from that it's made for the 50th anniversary of the Mayflower II)? Can't find anything on it anywhere. :drunk:

    Obligatory First HB Contest Post

Well, I finally gave in and sent in 5 beers to my first homebrew competition, expecting very little. It was a very nice surprise to get 3 2nds and a Honorable Mention, considering I've only been brewing since September. I'll definitely be getting more into the competition side of things once I...

    CAMRA Beer Club

Anyone have any experience with the CAMRA Beer Club? It seems like a somewhat decent deal (40 pounds for 20 beers), but I can't help but convert that to US dollars and think that $80 is a lot for 20 bottles of beer. Anyone joined the club and have any advice or opinions on it?

    Moral dilemma--is it worth it?

Alright, now, no one get mad--I love brewing and I definitely never want to stop. That's not the problem. My issue is that in September I'll be moving to the UK for at least a year to get my Masters and hopefully my doctorate. I'll be in Sheffield for at least that first year, which is in a...

Two 3-gal batches, any recipe ideas?

I've got 5gal of apfelwein that's about ready to bottle, so I want to branch out and try some other stuff. I love dry English ciders like Scrumpy Jack--how different would a recipe like this be from Edwort's recipe? I've heard some people don't like the liquid cider yeasts; could I use some...

    Pubs/LHBS in Sheffield?

I've been accepted into the MA English Literature program at Sheffield University for fall 2007, so I was hoping one of you all could tell me about any good pubs, breweries, or LHBS in or around Sheffield (or reasonably nearby cities, since I won't have a car). Anyone, anyone? :mug:

    SWMBO's German Shepherd Kennel

Just thought any of you interested in German Shepherds might like to see this: http://www.wilhendorf.us/index.html The new website of SWMBO's GSD kennel, Wilhendorf Kennels. They do great breeding, showing, and training. Great dogs.

    Hop Litterbox

So over the past few days, I've noticed that my hops (which are in pots in my basement) keep getting dug up. I figured it was the cat, so I yelled at him (doesn't help) and replanted them. Then this morning I noticed an excavation of pretty serious size, accompanied by a weird smell. The...

    Belgian Wit

Quick wit question--should I stick my usual 1tsp gypsum and 2 tbs Irish moss in there? I usually put them in to help clear proteins, but...do I want that in a wit? Thanks. :mug: It's my first wit, in case you couldn't tell.:o

    Grad School!

Sorry all, but I need to toot my own horn for a second. Just got my acceptance letter from Aberdeen University for an MLitt, and I am incredibly excited. No more will I have to suffer as an SAT prep tutor! :ban: The funny thing is I'm not sure I want to go--I've got applications pending...

    Craigslist Score

Picked up a 6.5gal bucket fermenter, a 5gal bucket, a 5gal carboy, a capper, assorted racking canes and stuff like that, and three cases of perfect clean heavy duty bottles for $25. Thanks Craigslist! Now I don't feel so bad about passing up that three-line kegerator for $200. :(

    Sanitization

I have a stupid question arising from a stupid mistake. For a blow-off tube I use a siphoning tube and just jam it into my stopper, which has been working fine. Except that today I hadn't checked on my Vanilla Creme Ale (now in day 3 of fermentation) up until about 10 minutes ago, where I...

    First Homemade Recipe Woes

So I picked up ingredients for my first homemade recipe and helped a friend to pick up his first starter kit. First, I got a papercut and bled all over my coupon--the cashier was less than pleased with me. Then I'm trying to crush my grains, realize I can't find the rolling pin, and try to...

    Cold Conditioning

I was curious, how many of you cold condition after carbonating? I know that doing it helps clarify the beer and all that, but flavor-wise, is it sometimes better to let it sit at higher temps? I know, newbie question, but are there certain styles that benefit more from one or the other?

    Northern Brewer Service

I've ordered some stuff from them in the past and had no reason at all to complain. I just received some stuff from them today (pyrex flask, DME, etc). I was thinking that it smelled sorta malty, when I opened it up and BAM, got hit in the face with a cloud of DME. The bag had a little hole...

    Hook Norton Best Bitter clone

The Hook Norton Best Bitter was my favorite beer when I was living in England, so today I was wondering if anyone knew a good extract/grains clone recipe for it. Anyone, anyone?

    Washing Yeast

I've just started washing a yeast cake for the first time, and I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer. I've been following the washing directions here: http://www.wyeastlab.com/hbrew/hbyewash.htm Anyway, here are the questions. First, about how long does it take for the...

    Growler Screw-tops

I just picked up a growler of porter from the Berkshire Brewing Company and I noticed that the metal screw-top was a little different from the plastic screwtop on the only other growler I have (from a HBS). The HBS growler has a little plastic bit on the inside of the cap, I assume to make the...
