    French Press

So I got my French press delivered today and I'm wondering what the best way to spice my pumpkin ale would be. The beer has already been kegged and carbed. Would it be wise to draw done beer off and use that with the spices in the French press? If so, would I heat the beer at all to help...

    First Batch of Cider...couple questions.

Last night I picked up 3 gallons of fresh (pasteurized) cider, 3/4 gallon of tart cherry juice and 3/4 gallon of black cherry juice. My plan was to add an addt'l 1/2 gallon of cherry juice to the finished batch, post fermentation, to bring it to 5 gallons and add in some of the cherry flavor...

    Need Help: Aeration/Oxygenation setup

So i'm looking to upgrade from a "shake until my arms fall-off" aeration to a pure oxygen setup. Here's what I'm thinking based on this thread: - Medical Oxygen tank from craigslist ($35) - Pediatric O2 Regulator - Dissolved Oxygen Meter - Silicon tubing - ...unsure... What would I need to...

Filtering Wort during Transfer to Fermentor

After discussing with some other folks about skimming the hot break during their boil, I had an idea that I wanted to put out there to see if others have done it, tried, are doing it, or if there is a good reason not to do it... I've been considering adding a SS braid to my tangential inlet...

Do you skim the hotbreak in your Kettle

Was listening to the Basic Brewing Podcast and there was a mention of someone skimming the hot break from the Kettle during the boil. I often times see a mess of something (trub?) during the boil that foams up, some of which is hops, but never thought to skim it... What's the consensus on...

    Hitting Post Boil Gravity

Hoping someone may be able to help me figure out why i keep missing my post boil gravity, or what things impact it. My last two batches, i've been using BS2 and followed it's instructions. BS2 estimated my pre-boil starting gravity to be 1.051 and 1.050, and my post-boil gravity to be 1.058...

Which is the more efficient Mashing/Sparge Technique?

I'm trying to figure out which would result in the more efficient (gravity wise) mash/mash out/sparge... Mash for 60 minutes @ 156*, then: 1. Lauter and completely drain first runs, add sparge water to grain bed to reach 168*, wait 20 minutes and lauter/mash out. 2. Add boiling water to raise...

    Water Filter Setup

So after brewing a few batches, i'm looking to start honing in on my water profiles. I've been using tap water and am trying to figure out what I need to get started. I've read about RO water and distilled water and some diy filters. I'm looking equipment advice on where to start or what to do...

    Is My Aeration Technique Okay?

so currently to aerate my wort, i use a paint mixer attached to my drill. after cooling the wort, i insert the paint mixer into my brew kettle, mix it up nice and good, then transfer via the ball valve into my carboy. Is this okay to do? Or should I be aerating it while in the carboy?

    Recommendations on beer/gas lines

There seems to be numerous types available and i'm trying to figure out what to buy and where to buy. Would prefer not to make a mistake and have to rebuy later. Currently, I run a primary double gauge taprite regulator to a 3-body secondary taprite regulator with 1/4" barbs, with vinyl tubing...

Kegging an Oberon Clone (American Pale Wheat Ale) Tonight

So after some digging online I found that I should be kegging the Oberon clone I brewed so it has about 2.5 volumes of CO2. My kegerator sits at about 45* so using the calculator, I estimate I'll need to set it at about 15 PSI. Knowing that, what is the best way to have this fully carbed by...

First All Grain, Second Brew Day

So my first batch is in the books and it turned out okay. It's drinkable and friends and family said it was good. Me personally, I thought it was just average at best, but for a first go around I'll take it. The first batch was an extract kit and I decided to go for an all-grain Brew Day...

    Force Carbing Stout

I'm in the process of doing my first brew (Peanut Butter Stout) and kegging. Saturday night I started the following procedure based on the recommendations of a local HB Supply Store: - Set the regulator at 30 PSI - Attach the line to the corny keg - Let it build until I no longer hear the...

    Quick Question for First Batch

For my first brew, the instructions say: Begin by heating 2.5 gallons of water in your Brew Pot to 150* and add grains...then malt later...then hops...rolling boil for 60 minutes...then cool to 70*...then add water until it is 5 gallons. Question: Can I just start with 5 gallons of water...
