Heating Element not drawing enough power

Hi All - Need some advice. Last week I ran the inaugural brew on my updated system (half barrel). I have a 50 amp box providing power to HLT (5500 watt element), Boil Kettle (5500 watt element), and RIMS (4500 watt element). Obviously I can only run 2/3 elements at one time. The issue was my...

Concerned about yeast being shipped from CA to East Coast

So, I placed an order from one of my favorite homebrew supply company's yesterday (warehouses in CA and PA). The order contained 5 packaged of yeast. Typically, my orders are delivered in one day so I've never been too concerned about the health of the yeast (especially since the weather is...

Disaster strikes - entire batch on the floor

So, after filling and mixing a batch of cherry melomel I lifted my new gallon carboy from the counter and the bottom literally fell off. Was left with an empty jug in hand and a sticky mess all over the kitchen. The carboy was obviously defective. So pissed - local honey is not cheap.

Any brewery / brewpub suggestions and recommendations? Will be there for our wedding anniversary, but the wife knows I'll need to satisfy my need to explore some Canadian beer culture. Thanks!

    Damned hydrometer...

So, I'm so irritated at this stupid hydrometer. I use a refractometer pre fermentation and use one of my my trusty hydrometers to check og (have a few in the drawer). My 16 gal batch of porter finished after a wild fermentation (WLP007) at 1.019. I figured it had a little more to go and upped...

    What's this? Infection?

Hey everybody, I've got 5 gallons of cyser that's been sitting for 6 months. Opened up to keg today and found this. Smells like apple. Figured it would have dropped clear, but still super murky. Thoughts?

So, I went ahead and translated the Korean in Google Translate and it's some sort of Korean massage advertisement. Repeats "Massage Mass production" over and over.

http://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/2017/01/09/keurig-wants-to-brew-your-own-budweiser-at-home.html Inbev sinks to new low. I wonder if they plan to sell these now at Northern Brewer...

Had to cancel my brew day

Short story, kid got sick and I had to cancel my brew day. Good news, my grains had not yet been milled and my yeast starter should have no problem sitting a few more days. My question has to do with my water. This was a half barrel batch and I had already run and measured RO water and...

OK Folks - it's independence day weekend. I have a 4 liter starter of pacman on the stirplate, a large grain inventory, and no idea what I should brew this weekend. As pacman is a very versatile yeast for american styles I know I have a few options. I need as many HBT hero's as possible to...

    Experiment: Bottling with gelatin

Happy Monday everyone - This weekend I decided I'd make the most of my current dilemma (too much beer) and bottle half of my Modelo lager as the keezer is full. The first 5 gallons went straight to the keg, fined with gelatin, and put on gas for carbonation. The last 5.5 gallons was...

    Mash efficiency through the roof

Good morning all - Brewed up a Vienna-Graf style lager this weekend and utilized a multi-step decoction mash (recipe below). Doughed in at 130, rest 30, upped to 140 for alpha, rest 30, upped to 150 for beta, rest 30, mash out to 168. Problem is that I ended up with a 1.061 OG in the...

Mini Wort Chiller (for yeast starters)

So, it seems necessity is indeed the mother of invention. Since I've moved up to brewing larger (half barrel) batches, I've needed much larger yeast starters. Trouble is, it takes me forever to chill the wort down to pitching temp using the old ice water bath technique. Ironically, brewing my...

    I broke my brewery

So, after installing my new electric valves on the Brewery I ran I quick test run. I had a small leak, took things apart to tighten fittings. When I went to tighten the ball valve another revolution, I managed to snap the pump head in two. Brewery now broken. So much for tomorrow's 16 brew run...
