    Upgrading Burner in SQ14

I've been brewing on a Bayou Classic SQ14 a little over a year, and I'm starting to feel like I'm outgrowing the 6" burner it has - the slow heatup (esp in cold weather or w/ large batches) makes my brewdays take longer than I'd like. I see that Northern Brewer sells 10" banjo burners...

    Sour mash in styrofoam cooler

I've got a 3lb sour mash with lacto 3 days in and am hoping to brew my first sour tomorrow. I happened to have a small cheap disposable styrofoam cooler on hand, so I just used that. Unfortunately, just a litte while ago I took a look at it and the cooler appears to have small amounts of thick...

    Measuring ABV Without OG

Is there a way to measure the ABV of a beer once it's brewed without knowing the OG? I know it's not possible via hydrometer, but wondering if there are other devices/techniques that can do this. Thanks!

    Alcohol Stratification?

Posted this in the Apfelwein sticky and got no response, so....: I've had 2 gallons of apfelwein in a small bucket fermenter for 3 weeks. It's my first non-beer fermentation. I pulled my first sample for a SG reading, then proceeded to start drinking the sample. The first third tasted like...

    Wort Aeration and Hop Character?

I was skylarking the other day and it struck me that using my aeration system on IPAs/IIPAs with lots of late boil and whirlpool hop additions might negatively effect the contributions of aromatics and oils via oxidization or simply allowing the aroma to escape prematurely. I'm guessing I'm...

    Help With Roggenbier Recipe

It's my first time brewing with rye. SWMBO is allergic to wheat, so trying to avoid it. Looking for feedback, please...thanks! Recipe: Roggenbier Style: Roggenbier (German Rye Beer) TYPE: All Grain Taste: (30.0) Recipe Specifications -------------------------- Boil Size: 6.48 gal...

Gose or Berliner With Little/No Wheat?

I'm interested in brewing my first sour but don't quite feel like investing 8-12 months seeing how it will turn out yet, so I was thinking of a Gose or Berlinerweisse. The rub is that my wife has a fairly mild systemic allergy to wheat (not gluten, just wheat), and I try to keep as many of my...

First AG Brew - Efficiency like WHOA.

I've been doing extract and partial mashes for my first 8 batches, but have been anxious to go AG. So even given my small boil kettle (5.75G), I decided to try a scaled down 3.5 gallon Maris Otter / Citra SMaSH. Brew session went smoother than most - no unexpected hiccups and nailed my mash...

    Pulley Question

Bought a ratcheting pulley to use with my impending bigger kettle. My LD Carlson brew bag looks like it just has a flimsy pull string at the top.... How do you guys safely attach your bag to the pulley line? (PS: I am aware that this is probably a ******* question whose answer will seem...

How You Make BeerSmith Do That?

I see that a lot of the recipes posted here seem to be some sort of text export from BeerSmith. I've been looking around, and I can't figure out what command will format it that way. Hoping to get some feedback on a recipe of mine before I go forward.

    Anyone Ordered From Brew International?

Ordered one of their scratch n' dent kettles with welded fittings, but they gave no estimate in terms of delivery. Anyone dealt with them and have input on how long their turnaround is? Trying to plan my next brew(s), but I can't go full batch AG until it arrives....:(

Worth Buying this Second Hand Keggle?

I'm in the market for a 15-16 gallon kettle so I can move to all-grain BIAB. Saw this on my local classifieds and was interested, given the price. Worth it?: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&ad=38265782&cat=&lpid=1&search=kegs&ad_cid=12 I wonder a bit about that pipe nipple extension, but I...

    Worth Adding Amylase Extract?

So...here's yet another stuck fermentation thread. I accidentally direct fired the partial mash for my Black IPA too long on the range and wound up with temps in the mid 160's late in the process. Now the SG seems stuck at 1.024 instead of the 1.017 I expected (OG 1.073). I've taken two...

Afraid of overpitching for 1gal batch

Hi all, Today or tomorrow I wanted to make an experimental 1gallon batch of this hard root beer recipe. I have Notty yeast, but only in mason jars harvested from a previous extract brew. I read in the sticky article that 1ml of slurry has b/w 1.5-2million live yeast cells, so I'm wary of...

    Basket or no basket?

I'm starting to outgrow the 23qt pressure canner I've been using to brew extract and partial BIAB batches, and am shopping around for a new kettle for all grain BIAB. Probably want 13-15 gallons, so I can do an 8 or 10 gallon batch someday. Is it worth it to buy a kettle bundled with a...

    Yeast Harvesting Question

So I goofed and both forgot to use a hop bag during the boil and forgot to strain when transferring to the fermenter. Any way to still harvest some yeast, or am I boned on this batch?

    Sleep on It?

So, I thought I'd brew a partial mash batch while the wife went to some dress-up awards thing tonight. But the setup took longer than expected, and a big dinner and some homebrews later :drunk:, I'm starting to fade with 60 minutes to go in my mash. (I'm not usually this lame, I promise)...

Question: Installing temp control into mini-fridge fermenter

I'm converting a used mini-fridge into my first fermenter, and need to create a place for the temp controller probe and the cord for my heating source to pass through. What have you guys done in this situation? I was hoping for feedback before I start drilling holes all willy-nilly. I can...

    Beginner's Temp Controller?

I got ahold of a mini-fridge I'm hoping to convert to a ferm. chamber, but I still don't have a temp. controller and I missed out on the recent Inkbird promo. Is it worth spending $50-$55 for the 308 or 310, or will the STC-1000 work just fine with its limited features? The fridge will live...
