Multiple mashes for a single batch - has this been done?

I was reading the 5 gal v. 10 gal mash tun threads and got to wondering. Could there be any benefit to mashing different grains in separate mash tuns? For example, the bulk of your base malt in one tun, at one temperature, and the rest of your grain in another tun at a different temperature...

    Yeast / Style dilemma

I want to brew Ed Worts robust porter and an American Amber Ale. I have Nottingham and WL002 English Ale yeast left over from old batches. Ed's recipe calls for Notty. White Labs site says 002 is good for robust porter. I'm guessing American Amber is good with Notty, but not true to...

Ed Wort, what would you recommend I do to your Robust Porter recipe with WL 002?

Hi guys, I figured I'd address this to Ed since it was his recipe, but feel free to chime in. I want to brew his Robust Porter recipe, but I want to use some WhiteLabs 002 English Ale yeast from another different batch. White Labs recommends this yeast for a robust porter. How would you...

    Ever use Coopers DME?

Morebeer.com has Coopers Light DME and free shipping. Ever use this stuff? Can you brew a light colored beer with it?

    Ray Daniels and Amber Ale

I was flipping through my 'Designing Great Beers' book by Ray Daniels and thinking about making an amber ale. I couldn't find any description of the style. This got me wondering if the 'Amber Ale' is a bastardized version of other beers and was created recently in America. I see on bjcp.org...

    I'm BACK!!!!!

Sorry, I'm a little fired up tonight. I haven't brewed since last August due to a back surgery and not being able to lift things over 12 ounces (at least the doc let me off the hook on that one). I brewed two batches today to celebrate. Ed Wort's Haus pale and a LHBS Brown ale are bubblin' in...

Brewpastor's Water into Barleywine didn't carbonate

I brewed this in May and was really excited to try it. It is really tasty, but it didn't carbonate. I used dextrose and bottled it. I used less than I normally would since it was going to be in bottles over six months. Is there any way to carbonate it now, or should I just ring in the new...

    Ed Wort's Haus Milk Shake

Hey guys. What have I done. I haven't had a beer yet that wasn't drinkable. I did Ed Wort's Haus Pale (with Windsor yeast since they were out of Nottingham). This was my 3rd time making this recipe because I like it so much. After 11 days in the primary, I kegged it. It wasn't clear at...

Effect of adding 3rd runnings as top off water

Hey guys. I did my 2nd all grain tonight. I really planned on doing mostly grain with DME to bring me to the proper OG, but this low gravity brew didn't need it. I filled my boil kettle to its safe capacity (7 gal) and had some left over wort from the sparge. It was 1.014 (temp adjusted)...

    Jamil Show site down?

Is the Jamil Show website down? I'm looking for his Southern Brown recipe.

Enzymes denatured with too hot of a mash-in?

I'm doing my first all grain. I calculated the strike water to be 168 so I would get a mash temp of 152 with 8.5 pounds of 65 degree grains. I pre-heated my igloo, and it worked too well. The mash settled at 165 for 3-5 minutes. I checked it and added cold water to bring it down to 154...

Need a Manny's Pale Ale clone

Anyone had Manny's Pale Ale ? A friend of mine is from Seattle and wants a clone for this draft only beer from Georgetown brewing. Thanks in advance.

    Apfelwein-normally carbonated or not?

Hey guys. Looking forward to making some Apfelwein. I read in the recipe section that you CAN carbonate normally with 3/4 cup corn sugar. My question. Is Apfelwein normally carbonated? I plan on kegging it. What would you recommend for volume of CO2? Thanks Beehive

How much will my top off water change my beer?

I did a partial mash of Ed Wort's Haus Pale Ale. It was my first PM. I ended the boil with 5.5 gal, but after whirlpool and siphon off of the cold break, I ended up with 4.8 gal. I topped off to 5.5, and now I'm wishing I had just let it be and kept the smaller batch. My after boil gravity...

    Utah is considering legalizing homebrew!

I wrote a letter to my rep. You can find your rep at: http://http://le.utah.gov/ then click Legislators, then click Find by Address/Map "...The Utah Legislature General Session ends on March 5, 2008. Therefore time is of the essence." Apparently the bill had a favorable recommendation in...

    Hefeweizen vs Belgian Wit

Hey guys, I was walking around today thinking about beer and what equipment I should use to build a MLT to start my partial mashing when a thought popped into my head. What are the differences between a hefeweizen and a wit beer? All I know (and correct me if I'm wrong) they are both...

Dry yeast in the freezer, will it still work?

I goofed and accidentally threw all of my unused supplies in the freezer, including a packet of dry ale yeast. It has been in there about 18 days. Is it still usable? I have a stuck fermentation, and now I realized I froze my backup packet. Can I save it? Thanks again, Beehive

    F.G. fermentation ?

I brewed a 'Brooklyn Brown' . It has been in the primary for 13 days. My OG was 1.065 and I took my first sample reading tonight. It was 1.038. That seemed high. Promash says that would be 3.58 % ABV. I used Wyeast's European Ale yeast 1338 I expected a lower FG and a higher alcohol...

    Final Gravity question.

Hey guys. I brewed a beer, but my hydrometer was broken so I didn't get an O.G. I bought a hydrometer and bottled tonight. It spent 1 week in the primary, and two in the secondary. The final gravity (after racking into the bottling bucket with the sugar water) was 1.020. That...
