This is my latest batch that I did yesterday:
5kg Pale Ale Malted Barley
80g Fuggles Hops (4.6% AA)
1 Tin Golden Syrup (454g)
1 Sachet Bread Yeast
Mash grains with 12.5 litres water, at between 63-67°C for 2 hours.
Sparge grains with hot water until just over 23L total wort volume collected...
My latest 5 gallon recipe is the following:
5 kg Irish "Hook Head" Pale Ale crushed "Minch malt".
60g Kent Goldings Hops (6.1% AA) at first wort.
This is a simple S.M.A.S.H. recipe for beginners to practice.
It's an Irish Cream Ale.
Btw, I found a youtube vlogger who said that the modern addition of hops has been revised to a 30 minutes of continuous boil rather than the 60 min quoted in most of the available theory. You don't even need to boil that vigorously once you reach the boiling temperature it only needs to simmer...
Actually, I realized to myself the reason why some people get blocked kettle filters whereas others are able to use the free floating method with no problem. Ime, it depends if you are using whole hops flowers or pellets. It's only the pellets than block the filter, this won't happen if you used...
Are you using a piece of apparatus like this?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124276461272
I was just thinking there must have been a reason why I switched to hop bags in the first place was because this filter was getting clogged with particles and would slow the kettle tap to a trickle. It...
I have been fermenting fruit juice for many years now with excellent results in my demi-john. You don't need to buy a fancy variety of yeast, ordinary bread yeast works fine. This doesn't mean that you result in a dirty batch or increase the risk of an infection. In fact, in all my years of...
That's interesting that it needs more bitterness because your claim you had an IBU=58.
Some of the users are claiming they brew batches with only IBU = 20, which is obviously too little.
I noticed that the hops you are using are all higher AA strains.
I tend to buy a lower AA such as...
https://www.brewersfriend.com/ibu-calculator/
This piece of software is useful.
For example, I was able to calculate that my current batch is 40.73 IBU, although while it is quite a weak batch in terms of the amount of grains used it still has a hoppy taste profile. It still tastes like a full...
This is quite a mildly hopped beer for the amount of grains that you were using.
I would have said if you added 2 oz @ 60 min and possibly additional aroma hops towards the end of the boil this would be my way of doing it for a more hoppy taste.
I guess the chocolate malt is not something I...
Yes I am going to make my own recipe similar to this one. I like the idea of using double the amount of grains that a beginner user should use (to gain experience) since in theory you reduce the electric kettle heating costs involve and therefore save money (provided you don't fail the batch)...
I'm planning on running a Doppel-Brau on my next batch to save on electric kettle heating costs.
My 2x recipe will be using 6kg Irish Hook-Head ale malt and 250g caramel malt.
The only thing is that my current single-strength beer is with 2oz 6.1% AA @ 60 min gives an IBU calculation of 40.73...
I bought a hop spider because I found on one of my homebrews that the filter that fits to the inside of the kettle would get blocked causing the flow rate to slow to a trickle. I bought some of the hop socks but I misplaced a couple and only have 3 left. If you buy the less expensive hops bags...
If you take a glass of clear beer from the keg and add sugar to this and leave for a couple of days, would this give me a yeast starter that I can use on the next batch without having to crack open another sachet of brewers yeast? That's an interesting theory, although that would be more an...
Note that the mesh size on the bags varies from 100μm (fine) to 300μm (course). Also there is a filter that attaches to the inside of the tap fixture. I might experiment with vorlaufing but I know that it is not 100% mandatory if you used a bag and did not leak anything from inside it. I can't...
I have used the cloudy sediment from the bottom of the keg at the end of drinking it. In my experience with this recycling method I have had infected batches in the past. I never had it with wine and cider though which I can recycle through many cycles (this is batch versus continuous industrial...
