    Forgot false bottom

Only thing I can think of is temperature loss in your mash from the transferring. If you were able to maintain your mash temp, no problem.

How many gallons of homebrew in 2016?

    418 + 10 gallons RIS + 10 gallons Amber Ale = 438 gallons

    Wlp530

Come on, this isn't very helpful. Would you mind expanding on your guidance? I use 550 in my Belgian Rye, but 530 would be fine IMO

    How's my crush?

I was using too tight of a crush when I moved to recirculating mash, and got stuck frequently. If you recirculate, you really don't need to crush very fine. FWIW, I have my Cereal Killer set to .042 Here's Kal's take on a crush using a HERMS system: Some brewers may find our 0.045"...

Looking for a change in IPA yeast-ideas?

If you want to stay clean, WLP 0090. If you want to get slightly different (English) Safale-04 If you want slightly fruity esters, Wyeast 1272. If you wanna get outside the box, WLP 0670. All great options. Temp is most important with 0090 and 1272, IMO

    Frustrated Mightily

How do you chill? That is often overlooked as a source of infection. If you use an immersion chiller, boil it, and make sure none of the water running through drips into your kettle. If you use a counterflow or plate, run boiling water through it.

I am giving up beer for 30 days

Awesome work man. Did you play hockey in AZ? I live in Twin Cities and have a couple guys on my league team that played at ASU. Pretty damn good players!

    HERMS coil diameter question

Do you have a fast read thermometer? Just take the temperature of the wort coming back into the MLT from the HERMS coil. If that wort is at the temp of your HLT, slowing the flow won't help things along.

    HERMS coil diameter question

I start out very slow, and eventually increase to full throttle for MOST beers. Something low protein with no adjuncts, full throttle no problem. IPA's, lagers, RIS, whatever. However, when I used lots of wheat, flaked corn, pumpkin, etc. I don't go full throttle, but still am able to...

    HERMS coil diameter question

I built a Kal clone as well, and went with the Stainlessbrewing 50 ft, 1/2" coil and the thing is awesome. Had a 25 ft 3/8 coil at first, and the heat transfer wasn't sufficient.

Rye beer- ?ready in 4 wks

OP has already brewed the rye beer. FWIW, I brewed a Belgian Rye Pale Ale on 5/25 and I was drinking it last night. I say give it a go.
