    Beer Clarity

I find with my Kölsch and lagers, it takes about 3 wks + to get crystal clear. I cold crash/ lager for 2 wks then keg and lager for 2 more wks at 32* then move to the keezer and force carb @40psi for 24 hrs. By the end of the second keg you can read the paper through it. Shorter answer-time.

    What's the lowest safe OG?

Not a Dr., but you might have a couple of options. 1) more exercise. Vigorous is better; run, bike, swim, racquet ball, walk stairs, park farther away from entrance at work. 2) diet- more veggies and more frequent, but smaller meals. 3) statins: sometimes genetics aren’t our friends. Been doing...

    Fastfermenter question

You were done the first time. You have to use a conversion when alcohol is involved. Just converting your 1.023 to Brix of 5.5 would have you at 1.004 fg. Not super accurate, but you were done a long time ago.

    Spent Grain Poll

Goes to the range fed chickens. They come running when I beat the bottom of the bucket. I did 10 gal batches and it is gone within the week. In cooler weather, some is used by the wife in all sorts of baked goods; the husks just add roughage. Save some for brew bones for the dogs who love them...

First Batch With Catalyst Fermentation System

I would hazard a guess that it is just the settling of yeast and trub. If you are capable of cold crashing it I think you might see that whole line "thicken" and fall out as it drops clear. Will do it anyway, but it will just take longer.

    Solitary brewer ?

As a retiree, I brew alone in the brew barn. If we have the family here (rarely), then they will be in and out getting beer and making small talk which I'm fine with. Otherwise, my wife will assist with dough-in occasionally and frequently pops in to pull a pint for her as she works in the yard...

What ph meter are you using

I've had this one for 2 yrs and has worked like a champ. I calibrate it each brew day using both 7 and 4 solutions. Quick, easy and backs up what my water reading predict. https://hannainst.com/hi98128-phep-ph-tester.html

A question about making wort to use for starter

Ive done what you described and just canned it in quart Mason jars. Put them in a pressure cooker or boil on stove top. Make sure they seal and put them in the pantry. They are at room temperature so just sanitize the flask, stir stick, foil and pitch your yeast. A little work up front for...

    Brew Systems: Spike, Blichmann, Sabbco

I put this together before either Spike or Blichmann put their package system out. Love the controllers for temp control. I like the combination of hands on for setting pump outputs and still can tweak things as needed to get numbers and repeatability. I went with the SS BMC’s and bit the bullet...

    Brew Systems: Spike, Blichmann, Sabbco

I put together a Blichmann electric system and SS conicals as my "retirement" gift to me.

Will this work? Active top cropping of yeast.

The concept is doable. Got a good amount of yeast that was nice and creamy off-white that would have been great for another starter. However, the air filter got blow off stuff in it which created enough pressure to pop the carboy cap off of the erlenmeyer flask. Could not risk it being...
