    Problems with my mash tun

I always brew 10G batches and 20 lbs of grain nearly fills a 7 gallon bucket when I mill it. At .05 gallons/lb, that would only be 1 gallon. It would seem that a gallon would hardly dampen that amount of grain. My spent grain is soggy. Maybe that is a BIAB advantage, and I have to admit I...

    Problems with my mash tun

His results are pretty much as expected. The water was absorbed by the grain. A quart per pound of grain absorption is on the very low side. He is losing about 1.15 quarts/lb and that is very reasonable. See: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=52012 or Google "grain absorption...

    80 qt (20 gallon) vs 60 qt (15 gallon)

Yes, I ended up choosing the 80Qt Concords. There's no way I could have brewed my last 10G batch with smaller without a boilover as with losses from boil, hop, equipment, shrinkage etc., I needed the full volume, nearly 14G pre-boil. I thought I would want to brew nearly as many 5G...

Confessing my ignorance... what is an "open grant"? Google let me down this time.

Is kegging always a battle against leaks?

Perhaps worse than that is finding too late, a leak on the liquid side. A couple years ago I had a leak empty my near full keg into my cooler.

Is $59.95 shipped to cheap for a reconditioned Keg?

Agree... I have about 6 ball lock from LHBS acquired 4-5 years ago at $25-$35 ea. Snagged a couple 10 gallon Alloy Products Corp (functionally same as Corny with 2x volume) for about $50 ea recently in a local auction. Watch CL and local auctions for a while and you should find good deals. But I...

    Wire Crimpers

I used the S&G Tool Aid crimper also available on Amazon when building my control panel and was happy with the results using insulated crimps. If you are about to embark on a control panel build, I will offer my recent lessons learned. First, avoid THHN wire if you can as it's not ideal for a...

    80 qt (20 gallon) vs 60 qt (15 gallon)

I am having the same dilemma choosing between the 16G Bayou Classic and one of the Concord 20 options for my e-brew system. I'll probably be brewing 10G batches at least as often as 5G. I don't envision larger batches, but I do want to be able to brew some high gravity recipes. I'll be...

Question about unexpected element on indication

I think I'll live with the leakage current partially lighting the indicator and call it a feature. It will visually show me my contactors and element select switch are indeed working correctly and that my SSRs have not failed in the shorted position (as I read this is common when they fail). I...

Wiring for control panel - sasi-wire.com

Though not technically a home-brew supplier, I had such a good experience with the company and their product, that I thought I would be amiss not to share. If this post belongs elsewhere instead, please do tell. For those building control panels, wiring PIDs, LEDs, etc., you do not have to...

Question about unexpected element on indication

I think I have confirmed it is leakage current lighting the indicator. With no load my Fluke 77 says 101v. Instead of risking my element, I decided to risk a 60w incandescent bulb and basically just took a lamp plug and held to the contactor lugs... lamp didn't light, indicator turned off...

Question about unexpected element on indication

I am 99% done with my control panel (Kal clone). Nothing is missing relevant to this question. When I engage the element select switch, with PID not firing the SSR control, my 240v indicator lights about 50%. When PID fires, it lights fully. I don't yet have my elements attached yet as I...

    Show us your control panel!

Exact same paint I used on the subwoofer I built a couple of years ago. Shamus thinks it looks spiffy!
