I had a similar, but different, experience last week. I brought my portable beer dispensing unit for a long weekend in Maine with some friends. One of the beers I had on tap became a favorite for one, and he is not a beer drinker.
Is your hydrometer reading correctly? Does it read around 1 for just water?
I read recently of one person whose hydrometer's paper had shifted inside and it consistently read 20 points high.
