    Canning all grain starter

About once a year I brew a batch of wort for canning. I use 20lbs of two row and end up with around 6 gallons of 1.070 wort. Run direct from the mash tun into half gallon jars. Then pressure can. When I need to make a starter, I use equal parts water and wort for a sizable starter of 1.035...

Heating Element not drawing enough power

Hi All - Need some advice. Last week I ran the inaugural brew on my updated system (half barrel). I have a 50 amp box providing power to HLT (5500 watt element), Boil Kettle (5500 watt element), and RIMS (4500 watt element). Obviously I can only run 2/3 elements at one time. The issue was my...

    Good source for non-GMO grains

Highly suggest: https://gmoanswers.com. Helped me understand the facts when I had questions. Like most information shared today, it turns out a lot of bad information is spread about this topic on social media and the internet. Also, if you have Hulu - I watched a great film called Food...

Concerned about yeast being shipped from CA to East Coast

So, I placed an order from one of my favorite homebrew supply company's yesterday (warehouses in CA and PA). The order contained 5 packaged of yeast. Typically, my orders are delivered in one day so I've never been too concerned about the health of the yeast (especially since the weather is...

Anyone have a Stout Tank Mash tun and can comment on efficiency?

About a 4' piece of silicone tubing. I've used fancier sparge arms and they are a waste of time/money IMHO.

Disaster strikes - entire batch on the floor

It's a basic 1 gallon glass carboy that would certainly be susceptible to changes in heat. However, the liquid (honey, water, cherries) was room temp so it wasn't a heat related issue. It literally just sheared off at the bottom.

Disaster strikes - entire batch on the floor

So, after filling and mixing a batch of cherry melomel I lifted my new gallon carboy from the counter and the bottom literally fell off. Was left with an empty jug in hand and a sticky mess all over the kitchen. The carboy was obviously defective. So pissed - local honey is not cheap.

    Onion aftertaste!

Summit hops are notorious for onion and garlic flavors and aromas.

BruControl: Brewery control & automation software

I've had mixed results with the Chinese megas and shields. After a few DOA, I've got them set up and working controlling the brewery as well as glycol control for the fermenters. Note, this is a manufacturing issue, not brucontrol. Been very pleased with the system, controls, and stability once...

    Traveling to Montreal in October

Any brewery / brewpub suggestions and recommendations? Will be there for our wedding anniversary, but the wife knows I'll need to satisfy my need to explore some Canadian beer culture. Thanks!

So how long have you been brewing?

Started back in 1999. It's been a life changing endeavor.
