    Multiple Beers Have Orange Smell

Maybe I need to dedicate one bucket to hoppy beers...I don't make a lot of them but I could always buy another to make up for it. I'm wondering if the better buckets from NB retain less Hop funk as they are a different type of plastic.

    Multiple Beers Have Orange Smell

So the two that I perceive to be astringent were mashed for 60 min at 152/153 and had a 10min mash out at 167. I basically plugged everything into both Brewers Friend and the Grainfather apps. I used Nottingham and S04 yeasts and my OGs were 1.056 and 1.061 for these batches. Beer fermented...

    Multiple Beers Have Orange Smell

Both were in different plastic buckets. One used Pride of Ringwood hops and the other Northern Brewer and EKG. The most recent one--the Pale Ale--used Citra, Mosaic, and Cascade and was also in a bucket. Are there any particular grains that can cause this scent?

    Multiple Beers Have Orange Smell

I've never used anything but PBW for cleaning so that shouldn't be the issue. I'm at a loss.

    Multiple Beers Have Orange Smell

I'm not that new to brewing overall but I'm still pretty new to all grain so I figured I'd post this here. My last few beers have had a distinct scent of oranges and I can't figure out what's causing it. Two of them seemed astringent and after kegging I found them nearly undrinkable. I took...

    Carbing and clearing

Thanks for the recipe...maybe I'll make it my second Grainfather brew. I LOVE helles...Hofbrau Original is one of my absolute favorite beers so this sounds perfect for me to try without necessarily doing a traditional lager phase. I have a cool Brewing jacket so I should be able to maintain...

Using my Grainfather for the first time

I got my Grainfather the other day and finally get to use it today. I ran a cleaning cycle with PBW per the manufacturer instructions and had no leaks. It heated the water to 131 from 100 quickly so hopefully I don't have any of the boil issues some people have reported. I did get the...

    Carbing and clearing

What's your recipe and what temps did you ferment at? I just got a Grainfather and really want to make a lager but I'd have to lager in bottles or in a keg (which would take up valuable space in my kegerator. If you pulled off something lager-ish with your recipe I'd love to hear about it!

    CO2 Refill - Tampa Area?

I know this is a resurrected post but figured it was still worth sharing this info. If you're close enough to Brandon then you can get fills (not swaps) done at the Craft Beer Cellar on W. Brandon Blvd. I recently brought 2 tanks in to be filled and they were warm so they suggested I leave...

    Carbing and clearing

I'm no expert and would like to hear what others have to say about this...but I'm curious if you're chilling your beer in the keg prior to setting it on co2. I always let mine sit in the kegerator for a day prior to putting it on gas...with the exception of purging the headspace right after I...

    Grainfather!!

Just wanted to say thanks to the people that posted about the Home Brew Supply sale. I ordered a Grainfather, hop spider, and an all grain kit last night for $70 less than the regular price for the Grainfather alone! I'm getting the Graincoat from amazon because it didn't qualify for the...

    Thinking about getting a Grainfather...

I have looked into BIAB but what I failed to mention is that I absolutely hate boiling on my glass top stove...it really limits the size of my pot. I also don't have any interest in getting a propane burner. I think the all electric aspect is the biggest draw for me when it comes to the...

    Thinking about getting a Grainfather...

So I've made about 6 extract batches since I got back into brewing and they've all been quite good but I think I'm starting to understand what extract twang is. All of my beers have had a certain something that is hard to explain...kind of reminds me of when I had soda in Europe which was made...

    Starter hasn't cleared

Thanks everyone...within 8 hours fermentation was vigorous and the airlock has been bubbling very aggressively all day...I'm happy!

    Beginner questions

If you're looking for a cheap and relatively easy means of temperature control, grab one of these at Walmart for like $7 and google "swamp cooler". It works great and helps keep fermentation temps down.
