I'm about to mash in on this for the second time. I still have some in the keg from the first batch, but I thought I would mix things up a bit. A chocolate coconut oatmeal porter sounds like an alcoholic mounds bar so I thought I'd give it a try. 4 oz roasted coconut at 10 min in the boil...
I just did this BIAB for my first go around at an all grain attempt. My OG was pretty low at 1.050. I added closer to 4 oz. of cocoa powder as I wanted it to be pretty high on chocolate flavor. Also, I mashed pretty high at 155-156 with a 170 degree mash out. It was really thick going into...
Congrats on a successful brew day! I still have not even had a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout but I think after work today I will find one and compare.
To answer your questions, the first one is a pretty huge debate if you do some reading on the forums. I have found best results in mid to lower...
I'm not familiar with the recipe you're talking about, so I can't comment on it too much. If you proceed with it, please post the recipe and how it turns out. The recipe I've posted is definitely a great starting point, but it could still be better. I've just made the conversion to all grain...
Awesome... I love the Brew Hut but I just moved out to Grand Junction... You don't realize how spoiled you are until you don't have that store anymore!
I used us-05, as I do with most brews.
If you like a good brown ale, try their Avery's Ellies Brown clone too!
I know you said you would prefer all grain, but this is an extract version I got from my LHBS who said they got it from BYO as a clone... I haven't had Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout but this recipe makes an outstanding stout... Maybe someone with some better recipe understanding can comment on it...
I already had a 9 gallon cooler so that was "free". I went with brass fittings (you can find them lead free, but if they don't specifically say lead free, you will want to pickle them. Just do a search here for that). I used a SS braid for a filter. It cost me $24 bucks at the blue big box...
This is my first time posting a recipe on here and am writing this as I drink the first glass poured from the keg. This is a recipe from my LHBS (The Brew Hut... If you're in the Denver area, by far the best place to go) and is suppose to be a Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout clone. I have never...
When I was a bartender and didn't have cleaning solution readily available, we would just use ketchup to clean all our copper piping. Same idea of course... Anything acidic does the trick.
Relax. Wait until day 7-10 and take a reading. If it's down in the 1.015 range or so you are fine, just be patient and don't rush things. While you may have pitched too early or too hot, from what your saying your yeast is still alive and doing it's job.
Thanks for sharing this site... Definitely the cheapest hops after being shipped that I have seen. I like that they have the variety packs too. Although, under specials it is $50 for a variety pack of 1 lb of 4 hops, and it is $22 for the same variety pack with half pounds... I'm no math major...
Odds are it didn't mess up the keg. If it were me, I'd toss the line and replace them and oxy clean and star san the keg and tap. Lines are cheap. Start there.
In the process of converting to all grain. Have my mash tun and keggle ready to go, just need time to brew and build a stand. Here's my pretty awesome setup now though. :mug:
