    Secondary fermentation

Ha, it's no test. I've just heard that some people just cover the top with foil or muslin because the CO2 is always at the base of the beer. At the moment I only have one air lock so I've placed my pressure barrel lid on my secondary. Was just wondering what other people use

    Secondary fermentation

I have just moved a stout to my secondary fermenter. Does the secondary fermenting phase need to have an air locked on it, air tight or can it just be wrapped with foil? I'm storing my secondary in a pressure barrel. Been reading different comments about what to use but just wanted some facts to...

    Getting more fermentation

Cheers for the advice, in this case I will leave well alone because I bottle my beer.

Buying my first kit this week

It sounds like for a first time brewer, you already have more then enough kit. I'm new at brewing (well since march earlier this year). I bought a starter kit with; Fermentation bucket with airlock Pressure barrel with lid and tap Jug Sterilization solution Stirring spoon (plastic) A pint glass...

    Getting more fermentation

I've been brewing beer for about half a year now, nothing to serious, just the ready made packs you just knock down with hot water and ferment. What I've noticed during the fermentation phase, is once the airlock stops bubbling, if you gently rock it (not hard but just enough to disturb the...

    No bubbling in airlock

Good news, the airlock is now bubbling so I'm happy! Cheers for all the advice any how, was educational.

    No bubbling in airlock

Yea defo learnt a lesson here, but say there is no activity in the next 48hrs, is it as simple as putting new yeast into the fermenter or what's the normal procedure?

    No bubbling in airlock

I chilled the wort, pitched it at around 40c I suppose, slightly warmer then usual....

    No bubbling in airlock

I made a batch last night and have a horrible feeling I pitched the yeast too early and killed it with the heat in the fermentation tank. This morning I had no activity in my airlock when normally by now it's going crazy!?! Shall I wait, pitch more yeast, or what?!?!

    Secondary fermentation phase

But if I was adding fruit to the beer, would an air tight secondary be ok or will it also need an airlock like a fermentation tank?

    Secondary fermentation phase

As a new starter to the hobby, I was wondering, when I transfer my beer from the fermentation tank to the secondary phase, will be beer be ok if the secondary fermentation is air tight, as I only have my pressure barrel to transfer it to. And how long do u recommend leaving it, in it's secondary...

    Carbination in bottles

I've made 3 batches of beer now, really enjoying and all that good stuff. But what I'm finding is once I've primed and bottled the beer, after a few weeks, it's carbonated but not really holding its "fizz" towards the end of a pint glass. Is this normal for home brew? I mean the beer tastes...

    First fermintation phase

I do have a hydrometer, I'm still learning myself on how to use it more accurately. But I was under the assumption that opening the lid to keep checking the reading wasn't a good thing coz it helps with the risk on contamination with the new air going in?!? So I'm guessing I was wrong there...

    First fermintation phase

I have brewed 3 batches of beer now so I'm still very much a beginner at this. Once the wort, sugars have been and mixed and diluted properly, the instruction say it needs about a week in its first fermenting phase after pitching the yeast. I do all this as instructed, but find that my airlock...
