Milling grains - corded vs. cordless drill

I owe a good response to this thread. For a reason I can't recall, I had in my head that using a corded drill with a fixed base grain mill build was the right way to go. Echoing my OP, the corded rotates too fast for my liking. Likely, too fast for the torque a grain mill would "want"...

    Aerate during fermentation

I will need a concrete plan to consider going for that post-pitch aeration. In a perfect world, could do it with the lid sealed... but there's the still the issue of doing so at the right time! Thanks all!

Milling grains - corded vs. cordless drill

I don't. LOL I'll have a look at the gear and see if there's any useful info to share back here. Thanks!

    Aerate during fermentation

Hi, I've got a big one planned for tomorrow with a target OG of 1090. EDIT - I'm re-pitching on half the harvested yeast cake from a freshly kegged 1.066 OG batch of the same size. Chill the wort after boil, rack to FV (Fermzilla All Rounder). I use a huge whisk, clasped between palms, and...

Milling grains - corded vs. cordless drill

Hi, I use a cordless drill on my grain mill. I love it but have recently inherited a corded drill. Was thinking about using the corded in a more permanent build (with a wood base). The corded drill, though, is probably very old. There are no settings to adjust. It's one speed when pulling...

    Sanitation anxiety

Thanks @AlexKay @hotbeer and @sibelman I needed some reassurance that it's probably just fine. How about harvesting some of the yeast cake for the next batch...would you do it? Thanks!

    Sanitation anxiety

Indeed I did! But my worry was for what dirt on floor attached to the ball float. In the panic, I'm not even sure where each and every part of the lid / tubing landed. I found a big patch of yeast on my jeans so here's hoping that's where the ball float or pickup tube filter hit. (Paranoid...

    Sanitation anxiety

TL;DR - opened lid to add dry hops and accidentally dropped the lid with the dip tube and ball float on the floor. In my heist to get the hops added, and reseal the FV, I sprayed the lid, dip tube and float like a madman before returning it to the beer. What’s the worst that could happen ...

    Inconsistent success using Fermcap-S

All that considered, it still does the job it's supposed to do. Point taken!

    Inconsistent success using Fermcap-S

Oh wow, 24 month shelf life. The bottle has nothing printed on it; the label has a string of numbers and letters below "product of Ireland". I'll just use my purchase date for reference... about 4.5 years ago! One note - this worked well in my two most recent starters. The liquid within...

    Inconsistent success using Fermcap-S

This very well could be the culprit. Thanks!

    Inconsistent success using Fermcap-S

Not snail pace but not warp speed either. I try to make sure there is a dimple on the surface. I did that on my latest 2L starter, no blow over! Perhaps that's to thank? Another revelation. I've always kept it stored in pantry, room temp. Bad idea? Thanks!

    Inconsistent success using Fermcap-S

Whoops, my mistake. I am using it with the intent of preventing flask blow-overs, in starters. That is, when the resulting cooled wort is in flask on the stir plate. Not during the boil phase. When I was using PET bucket for FV, I had a few blowouts. Through the airlock and seeping from...

    Inconsistent success using Fermcap-S

TL;DR - does it lose effectiveness if used in liquid boiling above ex. 205F? I always use it in my starters. In 2L flask, I have produced a starter at 1.8L that blew over. I always create a 1040 wort. While it boils, I add at least a drop of Fermcap-S (usually 3 drops because I squeeze too...
