Mature Crowns for sale! 3 year old Northern Brewer and 2.5 year old Newport. I also have hearty Cascade and Willamette rhizomes.
Hops have been growing at a friends ranch in very fertile, loamy soil. They are selling their house and unfortunately I don't have any more room at my townhouse for...
Just when I thought I had it all figured out, my second year Cascade hops are putting out non aromatic cones. I had a first harvest months ago. I picked them because the lupulin looked "school bus/yield sign yellow" like the guy from Gorst Valley hops said on basic brewing radio. I ignored the...
+1
I put my hops in the old-school zip-lock-less sandwich bags first to make sure the area around the seal was clean from any debris. Then I pushed the sandwich bag well below the seal and pumped the air out. As a back up I sometimes put them in old pasta sauce/mason jars.

Thanks guys! Rob, your response is right on target. I really do try to adopt a policy of "no molecule left behind".
It is easer to compensate for this loss with larger batches, and smaller batches it seems the opposite seems to be true. Lesson for me learned: in every batch I will...
Has anyone tried this? I just brewed a 3 gal ag Pale Ale batch and tried to calculate for break loss. I still ended up with only 2.5 gallons. I've always wanted to throw some boiled/sanitized water in with the protien and trub in an attempt to reclaim that last bit of sugars to get another half...
You know you are a total beer geek when this is the funniest thing you heard all week!
I'm looking foreword to my little ones assisting in brewing and tending my hop garden.
Err a bit on the thin side with your soap measurements. Perhaps a teaspoon per pint. I think mine was a bit too much and I it washed away a protective leaf wax a lot of plants have. I slaughtered the spider mites satisfying my cruel hatred of them; however some of my leaves look a little drier...
It looks like it's twisting counter clockwise, correct? Do you have any artificial light sources shining on it at night?
My first thought is that maybe an insect may have bit the stem causing it to curl. I have had a head curl back in on itself keeping that shoot from growing; it looked like a...
Last year I had this happen. They are probably dead. There is good news though! Don't buy a rhizome... Seriously! You can get a half year start by getting a crown from Great Lakes Hops that already has growth on it for almost the same price as a rhizome.

OOOOh lalala! Not the exclamation, the back up singers!
I just wanted to say from experience that the composted cow manure & humus you have in the picture is amazing stuff! My hops literally bursted with new growth every time I side dressed with it last season. However, I highly recommend...
Weather here in the middle Carolina's has been above 70˚ and well into the 80's for the past month. I love this early spring! My 2nd year hops are amazing at 12 or so feet with leaves as big as my hand!
My Cascade took off particularly fast and oddly enough has in the past 3-4 days...
