Skeeter Pee - Starting with Dry Yeast

I make mine by just mixing everything together, waiting 24 hours, pitching yeast, and letting the yeast do their thing. No yeast cake, no fermenting sugar water, to stepped nutrient addition, no stepped lemon juice addition, nothing. I do invert the sugar though, although sometimes I don't and...

    Stopping Wyeast 4184

Thanks for the responses. I suppose k-meta and sorbate will not stop an active ferment (never tried it, but see your reasoning). However, if I can get them to go dormant in the cold, then i should be able to get the fermentation to stop for good on the same basis that you add those two before...

    Stopping Wyeast 4184

I bet a few of you are scratching your heads at the title of this post, considering most problems with Wyeast 4184 are that you either can't start it, or you get stuck fermentations. Well, I have the opposite problem, and I want it to stop fermenting. I started this mead with SG=1.102...

    Too much nutrient?

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated!

    Too much nutrient?

So I started a vanilla mead last week (my first) and am using the dreaded Wyeast 4184 Sweet Mead Yeast. So far it's going pretty good. I made a killer starter with it and had very active fermentation in my primary less than 5 hours after adding it. Unfortunately I didn't time the starting of...

    "Cuties" orange mead

Ok, never mind. I'm not making this one evidently. Went to put everything together last night and found that the Darling Clementines that I just bought on Saturday are already nasty and moldy (on Thursday night). What a sham! So, I'm going to switch gears and try the vanilla mead instead. Just...

    "Cuties" orange mead

Going to whip up a batch of this tonight. Too late in the season for Cuties clementines (only see mandarin variety out there now), but the store did have Darling Clementines so I'm hoping that will works as a close substitute. Time will tell. Is there any reason to NOT use more than 12...

    Skeeter Pee

Update: Finally got my pee to clear recently. Picked up some sparkolloid at the LHBS last weekend and now she's all sparkly clear. That's some pretty good stuff (the sparkolloid that is). Cleared up within a couple days. Went ahead and racked it Sunday and will give it another week or so to see...

    Midwest Supplies

I live about 40 miles from MWS. Glad I do, cause it's so nice having such a great company local. Not sure I'd enjoy this hobby nearly as much if they weren't near by. Also, their customer service is indeed top notch. Was just in there Sunday and the guy helping me pick out a kit wine was...

    Hard Lemonade

For anyone that's done both this and Skeeter Pee, what is the difference between the two? Do you have a preference of one over the other? They seem so similar I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to try this recipe when I'm already working on a Skeeter Pee.

    Skeeter Pee

Finally made it through all 94 pages.....do I get a prize? :fro: I started a batch of SP back on 8/22, before finding this thread. Figured I'd give my method in case anyone cares: I only have 3 gallon carboys so I scaled the recipe down to a smaller batch. I didn't have any yeast energizer...
