    Interesting thought. That wouldn't have occurred to me, but if you know the TDS in your brewing water then I reckon maybe you can get from the TDS delta to OG somehow. [Me, I'll stick to my refractometer. :-) ]

    I've switched from the classic hydrometer to a refractometer and just need a couple of drops. I sparge with the malt pipe fully raised, so when I think I'm getting close I stick a spoon under the trickle and capture enough for the refractometer. Repeat as needed.

    Speaking for myself, I no longer worry about whirlpooling. Whatever hops/trub wind up in the fermenter, I leave there until I rack to secondary.

    Yep, I add water until the malt pipe bottom is just at the water's surface (filling the dead space) then I add my 1.7 quarts/lb using a marked pitcher.

    I put the pipe in, add my mash water, then heat the whole system. I've never had the pump clog. That's consistent with the idea that an empty pipe lowered into water displaces the bottom screen.
