Question about WLP051 California V Yeast Starter

Thanks everyone! This leads to another question, (I will go the refrigerator route 24 hours before pitching), how do I know how much starter beer to pour off. Will all of the yeast be at the bottom? (there is a small layer of trub) I do wash my yeast so i've seen the separation of yeast on...

Question about WLP051 California V Yeast Starter

Hello, Last night I made a 3 Liter yeast starter for a 12.5 gallon Black IPA (1.075 OG) that we plan to brew Saturday (basically 66 hours before pitching). I used 2 vials in the starter. I don't have a stir plate but I do shake it. This is in a gallon jar with loose foil over it. I...

Fly Sparging question, my OG has been low the past 2 brews

Hello, I've been all grain brewing since February and the last two batches I have been .0010 off (low) on my OG. (1.050 vs. 1.060 for example) Note: Two things different from my previous brews, I am increasing the final volume from 10 gallons to 13 gallons (I increased the grain bill...

Hi folks, I saw the Washing Yeast pictorial stickied after I tried a different method, so I'll do that going forward. Here's my question. I brewed 5 gallons of Czech Pils WLP800 and transferred it to my secondary and made sure to include plenty to trub. I let is sit at 50 degrees F for...

New to all grain, have a question about temp controlled mash for a pilsner

Hey there, been extract brewing for 4 years, just switched to all grain, have 3 AG batches under our belts (2 were successful, 1 irish red, 1 irish dry stout) and 1 not so successful (light american wheat where I only hit and OG of 1.030, I think I know what I did wrong). Anyhow, we want to do...

Partial Mash (Irish Blonde) kit question

Hey folks, Getting ready to brew Northern Brewers Irish Blond tomorrow. Their instructions for the grain part says (I've done partial mashes before, I am probably overthinking more than anything), to "steep the grains for 20 minutes until the water reaches 170 F, remove bag and discard."...

Do you think this yeast is any good?

Thanks for the replies. I guess the only reason i think it's bad is the airlock isn't bubbling, probably not the best indicator but this is the first starter i've done, and i've done this same beer last year, where the airlock didn't bubble, even minutely, during the starter.

Do you think this yeast is any good?

Howdy, I recevied a watermelon ale kit from Williams brewing (I've done this one before with great results) which came with wyeast 3056 Barvian Wheat Blend dated Dec. 14, 2011. I made a yeast starter of 1/3 lb DME and 1/3 gallon of water. (I don't break the bubble in the smack pack, I...

    Partial Grain Question

Hey folks, I picked up a kit today from Brewmaster Select, Hazelnut Brown Ale, and I've done partial grain brews in the past where i seep the grains for 30 to 60 min at 152 degrees F (or whatever), then add this to my main boil of DME and continue the recipe. These instructions that came...

Not quite sure what to think, extract Pilsner SG

Ok, so it does sound possibe, I didn't do any calculations at the beginning. I took the reading around 85 degrees F. Well, good point, this kind of puts it in perspective. The trub had settled after cooling, and the reading i took was within a minute or 2 after the transfer began to the...
