    Odd town/street name

There is a Boring, MD and no not much happens there. The Lancaster county PA towns mentioned above always crack me up because if you are in Blue Ball but you can’t quite make it to Intercourse you could always end up in Bird In Hand.

    T-58 experience

I like T-58 and use it every couple months. I have my best luck pitching at 68 degrees and letting it free rise to about 75 degrees. Not at all uncommon for it to work quickly. The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't floc well. It takes FOREVER to get clear beer unless you hit it with...

Getting Red Ale while minimizing flavor effect.

I have had good luck using 2 oz of debittered black malt in a 5 gallon batch with a 10 lbs malt bill and it gave a nice red hue. So that’s about 1.2%. I used Briess debittered black but Carafa III special should work too.

The most expensive way to Homebrew

It’s quite impressive. I admire your dedication to this endeavor. At your projected price point I think some of the 1-2 barrel tiny breweries popping up everywhere would be very interested. I’m not sure how many Homebrewers would be willing to part with $35k to have that in their house but all...

    Life's simple pleasures (besides homebrewing)

Fishing, especially out of a kayak.

    Maryland HELLO...Hello...hello

If you are new to the area, check out the Freestate Homebrewers Guild. It is the parent "club" over the 18 homebrew clubs in Maryland. You are bound to find a club near you. Attend a meeting or two and find some likeminded beer nerds.

A tale of first two BIABs. What do you use for bags?

Get a bag from Wilserbrewer, you won't be disappointed. FWIW I doubt the bag had anything to do with your efficiency UNLESS the bag was too small for the kettle and not enough water reached your grain. The fine mesh I'm confident had nothing to do with efficiency. Get a custom bag, they are...

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

I'm sure it's been said umpteen times in the previous pages but I always tire of being asked how much money it saves me. UGH! I don't do it to save money, I do it to be able to make whatever I want and have the proud feeling of having made it myself. It's the same reason I grow my own veggies...

Cinchona bark to bitter a gruit?

I used the recipe linked below for tonic syrup and I was very pleased with it. https://pinchandswirl.com/homemade-tonic-water-for-the-ultimate-gin-and-tonic/ Maybe I will make this without the sugar and add it to the gruit for bittering.

Cinchona bark to bitter a gruit?

I have some interesting herbs and things that I bought to make homemade tonic syrup for gin & tonics. I've made the syrup and it makes the best G&Ts ever. At last weeks meeting my homebrew club started talking about having a gruit as the style of the month sometime soon and now I want to brew...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you see a billboard that says "'Tis the season to be hoppy!" and you get all excited thinking beer only to realize it's advertising some indoor kids jump/trampoline place and you get disappointed.

    Stupid Joke Thread!

I have a 13 year old at home that loves to tell me jokes like these. He calls them groaners. His two favorites. What did the fish say when it ran into a concrete wall? Dam! Did you hear about the dyslexic devil worshipper? He sold his soul to Santa!

    slaked lime addition

I bought pickling lime from a local Latin grocery. They had a bag right with the dried herbs and chiles. It's used to treat corn to make masa. For brewing I weigh it out and dump it into the water as it is heating along with any other mineral additions. It appears to dissolve readily into the...

    Malt(Golden Promise) price

I just bought 10lbs of Golden Promise yesterday from my lhbs and paid $1.87 a pound. Not the best price in the world but they are 5 miles from my house and busy so there is good turnover.
