    Stalled Fermentation

It's currently at 57. My basement is a little colder than usual with this whole polar vortex thing.

    Stalled Fermentation

Making a wee heavy. Pitched Wyeast 1332 at 60 degrees. Yes, I now realize the temp range for it is 65-75. OG went from 1.081 to 1.040 over past 2 weeks. I should theoretically be down to around 1.021. Do I warm it and shake the carboy up? Warm it but not shake the carboy up? Leave it...

Double IPA Dogfish Head 90 Minute Clone

I have run this recipe through 2 different calculators now, and keep coming up with IBU of 150+. Is this correct? I see from the Dogfish head websit it is listed at 90. And the original recipe here lists 90. What am I missing?

    Kitchenaid Kegerator build

If there's a plug for the water line, try using a piece of wire to get from the plug to the inside of the freezer compartment through the hole. I would definitely use that as my insert place for thermocouple. Should be easy to go from inside freezer to inside fridge without hitting anything...

    Kitchenaid Kegerator build

The condenser fins are probably on the bottom. There should be a plastic plate you can take off the bottom front. If you pull it off, you should see the fins under there if you look with a flashlight. In your first picture, there is a white line going in. What is it? In your second picture...

    Kitchenaid Kegerator build

This is the interior. You can see I mounted the manifold at the back right and the CO2 line is coming through below the the manifold right through the back wall. The drip tray is low enough for me to fit a growler under it with a filling tube. I've still got the other door if I want to...

Here's mine And the inside of the door.

    Kitchenaid Kegerator build

I just did this. One consideration I had was ability to add more taps at a later date, only put in two to start. The fridge should have it's own temp controller, but it will be with numbers as opposed to degrees. You can use a thermometer inside to check the temperature settings and it is...

    Stalled Fermentation

Didn't check the gravity, but I understand your point. Think I'll gently warm it up and see what happens in 24 hrs. Next question: Should I quick get in there and re-aerate it?

    Stalled Fermentation

Brewed a London Brown Ale yesterday (5gal batch, all grain). Put it in the basement to ferment. Today, I got no bubbles, no activity, no nothing. Used Wyeast 1335. Noticed today the temp is 57F. Looked it up and Wyeast 1335 needs 63-75F. So, I threw my brew bucket in my swamp cooler and...

What's the purpose of the boil?

What exactly is the purpose of the boil beyond hopping and sterilizing? It seems there's this magic number of a 1 hour boil, but where did that one hour come from? Any reason why the boil couldn't be less time for a beer with a lower hop profile? These are the things that keep me awake at...

Sweet beers. Malty beers. Dark beers?

Try Paulaner Salvator. Best doppel bock there is IMHO. I like the malty stuff too. I just racked a Potlatch Doppel Bock into a keg from secondary. Got recipe from Papazian's book, I'll let you know how it turned out in about 2 months!

    Gravity reading question

There's a nice little calculator here: http://www.brewersfriend.com/abv-calculator/ There's also a temperature converter for your hydrometer here to adjust for the calibration versus actual temp you take the reading at: http://www.brewersfriend.com/hydrometer-temp/

I love the smell of a mash in the morning

I dumped my spent hops in the stinky kitchen garbage can last night and left it. Now I find myself sniffing my garbage every 10 minutes because it smells amazing!!! Note to self... spent hops makes a good deodorizer!
