    No. I don't believe that would be enough of a thermal shock to damage a thermometer. I'd say, to break a thermometer, you'd almost have to take a frozen thermometer and place it in boiling water. They are pretty tough.

    The only way I see it could be operator error if if the thermometer was cold and then put in real hot water.

    I was going to mash in a kettle then put in oven to keep warm. Then I was going to place a strainer lined with cheese cloth over my brew kettle, pour through that and sprinkle sparge over that.
