Thanks for all the replies.
Part of me assumed the hose was the issue. I live in the UK and the online homebrew selection isn’t nearly what it is in the US. So far I haven’t been able to find a hose barb on it’s own in 3/16. There are full shank sets which I’d rather not pay for something I...
According to the line length calculators I’ve used that’s what I need to provide enough friction to slow down dispensing. I was sceptical at first too but with any shorter lines it fires out too first, creating foam.

Those computerized starter calculators are a bit exaggerated. I use Beersmith and for a 6 gallon batch, average OG with a 2 liter starter it says I still need 14 packets of yeast.
Looking at the vial it had about the same amount as you would get in any other primary fermentation vial. About .75 inch. The vial of amalgamation II I got only had a thin layer of cells at the bottom so I thought a stepped starter wasn't necessary for this one.
My plan was to set up a sour mash today and then finish it off tomorrow or the next day. I made a starter from WL648 brett brux trois vrai sunday morning and it is now tuesday with no activity in the starter. Anyone have any experience with this yeast? Is it just a slow starter or should I whip...

I only use a refractometer for quick run off gravity checks. And the boil wasn't like it was jumping out of the pot. The bubbles would rise maybe an inch and a half from the liquid level. With that being said it was concentrated to pretty much above the element. The rest of the wort wasn't bubbling
Do you think it could be an aeration issue? I let the wort splash at the bottom to get mixed up but beyond that I didn't do much else. It looks like I can make an aeration set for not too much money.
Sorry, was looking at the old recipe. 71% pale and 10% rye crystal malt. I was expecting a slightly higher FG like 1.014 at best. But not 1.030! I have a pack of nottingham that I'm going to toss in. The beer doesn't taste bad and it's for a competition so I might have to bottle it and hope my...
I've been home brewing for a number of years now and also a student at University for brewing. The forum will come in handy for straightforward answers that aren't vague and overly scientific.
