gonna do an American IPA, split batch to compare wlp001 vs wy1272 to see which i prefer. pretty standard ipa grain bill @ 1.070.

i tend to go crazy with hops and came home with (in oz)

1 x citra
1 x centennial
1 x nelson sauvin
2 x motueka
1 x columbus
1 x cluster
1 x mosaic
1 x pacific jade
1 x palisade

my plan is to have a 60 minute bump of herkules, but use an equal blend of those mentioned above at:

FW
20
15
10
5
0
Dry

i'm imagining it will be quite a bit tropical fruity and a little citrusy, but overall should be a good thing?

Everyone has their own tastes, but I've done 2-3 of these garbage bag IPAs, and have been really unsatisfied with every one of them. You tend to get muddled flavors/aromas instead of awesome results.

Maybe your results will be different, but focusing on tropical/earthy/citrusy/dank...seems to be a better plan than a little bit of everything.

thanks, i think that's valuable feedback. i do think the hops i chose seem to have some things in common though. most all of them have descriptors like citrus, floral, or tropical, and are "new world hops".

i'm not mixing earthy and citrusy, they should all be in the same ballpark perhaps with the exception of motueka.

i'm also not saying this isn't overkill. are there any yeasayers?

From an amount standpoint...its not overkill.

From my perspective (and mine only) I feel like you can combine 2/3 of those descriptors, but when you get into the 3/3, you start getting general "hoppy" flavor/aroma, instead of being able to say intense citrus, mango, dank pot...etc. I'm not saying the beer won't be good, but I doubt you're going to be able to say "man I love the "x" aroma/flavor in this IPA".

I'm sure it will be good but it's sort of a crapshoot and would be hard to repeat.

i think i've narrowed this down some and would like to use some combination of this subset:

citra, centennial, motueka, columbus, mosaic, pacific jade, and have herkules as well.

thinking of using nelson sauvin, cluster, and palisade in some small single hop test batches.

i have 2 oz of motueka, mosaic, and pacific jade and 1 oz of everything else.

i'm thinking of a fwh, a necessary amount at 60 and as much under 20 as i can manage, then some dry hops.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gonna give this a go this weekend.

for 8 gal into fermentor, 8.94 gal end of boil (ambient).

OG: 1.070
81.8 IBUs (Tinseth) / 73.7 (Rager)

mash @ 150

going to split the batch and pitch WLP001 and WY1272 to compare the differences.

ferment at 66, raise to 70 for dry hop (which i haven't added to the recipe yet).

maybe centennial and citra?

I'm thinking I could also replace the Nelson with something neutral like Herkules to keep the bitterness but focus the flavor a little more ...
