Maybe I'm over thinking...but when moving cleaning solutions/water thru the beer lines/taps, you kinda waste CO2. Can I get away with using an air compressor to pressurize the keg? Thinking you could build a simple ball-lock to <something> hose to allow you to apply some pressure. Any limit to the pressure a corny could take?

Any downsides?

Buy a water aspirator from a lab supply house(cheap), and use vacuum to pull it thru. You will need std. water pressure to operate the asp'r.
Maybe Wiki will show how?
