So I got to thinking when my rubber gromet ripped AGAIN in a plastic fementing bucket. Why can't I drill out the hole and use a rubber carboy type stopper instead? Any thoughts or experience in doing this ??

I'd try using some keg lube on the rubber grommet first before drilling a big hole in the lid. Will grease it so when you insert your airlock you don't tear it. (Assuming that's when you tear it, don't know how else you would though).

I've used a small silicone stopper since the first time I lost a rubber seal into the wort. Works great...

I've never had any issues with mine, so I can't relate. That being said, drilling it out for a stopper would be fine. You could also just go with a regular lid and not snap it down.
