When making a yeast starter with wyeast smack pack, is it necessary to smack the pack hours prior to pitching or directlly before?
 
There's not much in there so my recommendation would be to smack, keep shaking occasionally as it "wakes up", then pitch at it's peak (right before it's hard from the CO2). This gives you a higher cell count from a sterile starter that's ready to go.

Of course if you forget there's nothing wrong with dumping it straight in but planning makes perfection.
