I have had efficiency issues with all but two batches of AG (now 9 deep in AG), so I troubleshot the crush, my thermometer, volumes, mash temps, etc..... My main issues came up when I brewed anything non-dark (2-Hearted Close, APA, ESB, etc...) I had no problems with a brown or a milk stout, so my water is likely hard. Anyhow, I decided to brew EdWort's Haus Pale Ale and to use RO water with CaCl2 and acidulated malt additives. Well, I ended up with close to 70% efficiency when I was lucky to get 55% with tap water. I used the 4662 pH strips with no real indication, they seemed to stay the same color, but I am somewhat confident that my mash pH was correct being I hit my OG without having to add DME or anything else. Just thought I would share.......... I am happy. :rockin:
