Confused Newbie: Pilots,Banjo Burners & Automation

I originally posted this in DIY, but I don't think that was the right category. Mods, please forgive me...

Hello all,
Let me first start by saying THANK YOU to everyone for all of their posts on their DIYs, especially Brutus 10s. I have been admiring and reading from afar and decided to build my own brutus 10.

I have no experience with pilots and electricity, but I do have some friends that are pretty decently experienced with it.

So, I have my frame built out and welded and have purchased 3 banjo burners from Northern Brewer: http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/cast-iron-banjo-burner-burner-only.html, as well as the 30psi Regulator Kit http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/30psi-regulator-kit-for-banjo-burner.html.


Now, after researching for days & days and hours & hours, I'm still not quite sure what items to purchase for the pilot and automation. I have seen many opinions and some pictures, but no real direction because a lot of the pictures have been moved over time and are no longer there. From what I understand, I need to purchase these products (see below) for the burner pilot. Let me know if this is correct and/or what I need to add or purchase.

For Pilot:
- Gas Valve Part # Honeywell VR8300A3500
- Pilot Burner Q314A4586
- Thermocouple Q390A1061
Where do you recommend I purchase the above parts?

Now, for the automation & control panel:
If using the above products (again, if all are correct), what products should be used to make the automation control panel?

Again, thanking everyone in advance for their time and advice. After I get this all figured out and built, I vow to create a post with all of this info for newbies to come.

Do a search on ebay for honeywell gas valves, then look for a intermittent pilot retrofit kit, this will include most of what you need except the 24VAC transformer and Pilot Burner as well as a PID. I just got mine today it cost $120.00 shipped, this kit even came with an kit to convert to LP gas. Go to Auber instruments to purchase your PID, they have a good selection of PIDs, sensors, switches, alarm buzzers and lights. If you are using LP gas and a honeywell valve you will defiantly need to use a low pressure LP gas regulator also the jet orifice of you burners will need to be sized for the low pressure LP too. Now if you plan on doing this manually you can just tee off the gas line of your rig and hook up to a standing pilot burner, similar to how the Brutus ten is set up.

I am using LP gas on a automated RIMS system. What Intermittent pilot retrofit kit did you get? and what honeywell valve would you recommend then? How do I I "resize" the burners for low pressure LP? Again, I have lots of questions....

Burner/Pilot:
HLT and MLT
• Valves: Honeywell 1/2", 24 Vac Standing Pilot Gas Valve (sku: vr8200A2132)
• Thermocouple: 24” (SKU: 390A1046)
• Pilot Burners: Honeywell Q314A4586

LP Conversion Kits came with the pilot burners and the honeywell valves.


Control Box:
• 2 PID Controllers (HLT & MLT) from Auber Instraments : Universal 1/16 DIN PID Temperature Controller
• 2 Panel mount connector for RTD sensor - Model: RTDCON from Auber Instraments
• 2 RTD Probes: Liquid tight RTD sensor, 60 mm probe, 1/4 NPT Thread (SKU PT100-L60NPT)

Again search ebay for honeywell intermittent pilot retro fit kit, it will come with everything except the pilot jet, the kit includes the gas valve too.

All gas burners have a particular size orifice at the end of its gas jet, this orifice injects the pressurized gas and air mixture into the burner, depending on gas type and pressure requirements the orifice will be of a certain size. Natural gas and LP gas will have different size orifices same with low pressure vs high pressure LP gas.

If any type of LP gas automatic furnace valve is to be used you MUST use a low pressure regulator as well as the proper orifice size. I am using the BG14 bayou classic banjo burner, I had to remove the brass jet and drill it out to 3/32, some have gone a big a 1/8. Brewers hardware has the proper size jets for low pressure LP as well as the correct low pressure regulator, see link below. Too small of an orifice the flame will be very low and could blow back, too large of an orifice and the flame will be very orange and lazy.

Oh and I HATE to be the guy who directs you to the search function as I hate when someone does it to me but.....I searched all over this forum reading a ton of posts to finally get to the point where I'm at now as I'm sure you've done as well.

Short answer is there is no real correct way only the way that woks best for you.
