Like the thread title I'm rack 5 gallons of mead, noticed there's a 2-3 inch layer I guess which is whiteish/opaque that's thready from top down. Then the mead is clear until the yeast cake. Any ideas?

My skeeter mead was doing that. All that is, is yeast hanging out at the top cause the mead has not degassed much. After racking that should go away.

It looks like a LOT of headspace in that carboy but it's hard to tell from the picture. If it is, it could very well be something like a lacto infection. I hope not, but it can happen. How long has it been sitting like that, with that much headspace? If it's only been a short time, it may not be infected.

Been racked for approx 6 or so months. Used lalvin champagne yeast. Not that much headspace during ferment etc, I noticed it while racking.
