Thanks. Actually, I didn't know about cooking part. So as a food lover, I should check it too! Also interresting to hear about your relatives :)

Welcome to the group, from CO. You are in the land of wonderful lagers.
Thanks. Funny I brew only top fermented ales :) It is because I don't have fermentation chiller, but it will be another step in the future.
But also another reason is that I don't like lagers too much. I liked them before, but when I first tried IPA, I discovered new world. Anyway, I am talking about commercial lagers, like Staropramen, Gambrinus, Budvar or Pilsner. They are all crap except Pilsner, which is quite good. But lagers from small breweries (usually also with own restaurant) are something totally different. I still prefer ales, but sometimes I like to have one of these lagers.

Well, as a brewer in lagers land, it would be shame if I won't brew them when I have the best conditions in the world, right? :)

Welcome to HBT!

Between this site and The Brewing Network podcasts there's a ton of things to learn. I've been brewing since 2009 and just about every time I log on to HBT, I end up with more brewing knowledge.

Is home brewing a popular hobby in the Czech Republic?

That's nice. Looks like neverending hobby. There is still something to improve. And I will go further - I want to try to study brewing school after this summer, so after 3 years I will be able professional brewmaster :)

There are a lot of homebrewers, mostly brewing lagers, but I am not sure how much of the population is it, especially in comparation to US. Also, they are using different equipment and methods (which lagers requires).

I have to say that I brew in US style, so I have simillar equipment and I am using simillar methods (I was learning from J.Palmer's book), but I think there aren't many brewers like me.

Who knows, maybe when they try your US-style ales, you'll start a trend? You never know what the future will bring...:tank:

Well, I have to say that beer culture is rapidly transforming these days. More and more small breweries appears and most of them brew a lot of good ales. So people are discovering new world behind the standard lagers. Me included. Before a year, I didn't know that something than lagers even exists! And now I am biggest ales fan and even brewing them :D

welcome! I'll be in Prague in September - any recommendations for brew pubs etc. to visit?

Hi, of course. I can highly recommend this brewery, my favorite:
http://www.u3r.cz/en/
It is in the historical center (few steps from "Staromestske namesti") and they always have 3 czech lagers and about three seasonal beers, mostly ales or special lagers.

If you are going to visit Prague's castle, there is my second favorite brewery:
http://www.klasterni-pivovar.cz/index.php?process=34&languageID=2
They have always two lagers and about two seasonal special beers. You can sit outside and watch the monastery (especially nice in the dark, when lighted).

And finally, if you want to try classic pub with many beers on the tap, I can recommend these (but webites are in CZ only):
http://www.zlycasy.eu/
http://www.restauracekulovyblesk.cz/

If you will need help with something, let me know :)

I am also planning on being in Prague in Sept! Sounds like a party shaping up. I'm new to brewing and have made a few ales and two lagers, I am looking fwd to visiting the Land of Pilsner!

OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much, these will each now be on my destination list. We will actually be staying right on Staromestske namesti so this will be very useful information. Good luck with the homebrewing, it should be nice for you to get some exposure to our style of ales. :mug:

btw, I went on this trip in September, appreciated the advice. I only got a chance to go to Klasterni Pivovar, which was amazing. I loved their amber. We loved Prague, such a beautiful city and incredible beer. :mug:

BlackGoat: Glad to hear! :) Klasterni Pivovar is really good place. I am happy it is in a walk distance from my home (nice walk in the gardens around the Petrin's tower).

And some news - I am really studying a brewery school as I mentioned in one of the earlier post. Still cannot belive it :)

Czech beer is awesome. Enjoyed my visit last year and all the beer flavors your country had to offer

Sorry to wake up a dead post, but I'm an American living in cz and just started brewing this year. I don't know anyone here who brews. I live in Milovice but travel to Prague everyday for work. If you're still into brewing we should try to connect sometime. Na zdravi!
