Can I buy a specific type of ale yeast in a powdered form and then use it and make a yeast starter from the sediment at the bottom of my fermenter? I am thinking of buying some safale yeast and store the starter yeast I make of it in the fridge (this way I can save money on the yeast. . . . I guess.)

Sure... you can make a stater out of any yeast and you can harvest yeast from a past brew...

I am going to brew an American Summer Ale and an English Summer Ale this weekend and then use the yest to brew a Bass clone and a Fate Tire clone.

BUT dry yeast is pretty inexpensive and there are a lot more "cells" in a paket than "smack-packs" or "Tubes".

If you really want some yeast I would Harvest from a previous batch... read the following: and look at some of the other articles
