My first rhizomes should be arriving shortly (2x chinook and 2x tettnanger)

I have narrowed down my choices to two locations, both with their pros and cons. I am limited due to the fact that I still live with my parents (GOD DAMN STUDENT LOANS!!)

Spot 1: Facing south, backed up against a 6ft fence.
Pros: -room to spread out the plants with ample space
Cons: -My father is limiting what ever I construct to 4ft over
the fence line, which puts me at 10ft.

Spot 2 facing south, back up against a huge tree ( 12'+ round) south
side limbs are trimmed back severely.
Pros -Vertical growth is relatively limtless.
- Construction is next to nothing ( Eye-bolts and
twine)
cons -not a lot of space to spread out without sacrificing sunlight exposure.
- potential high climb in future years for harvesting.

Any input on my situation would be kindly appreciated.

I really do not know what to do.

Wouldn't the invasive root system and compact soil near the huge tree also be a con?

I still have student loans and I've lived on my own since I was 18 :)

Wow! You got me there, Doc.

Good luck with your hops and don't let your dad drink all of your beer :mug:

Tough call without actually seeing what the choices are, but from the descriptions I'd go for the first option on account of the available space.

There are ways to kinda make up for height you can find posted on the forum (eg: let the bines grow to your 10 foot limit, then lower the drops and let the bines grow back up the drops, repeat for as much line as you had foresight to put into those drops ;) )...

Cheers!

Going with the 10 foot tall model, if you stretched a line across at, say five feet, you could drape the bine slack over that when you lowered the drops five feet, which should form loops roughly 2-3 feet deep.

So, yes, in essence you'd be coiling or looping the bines as you went along...

Cheers!
