The Dark Lord ....cloning this massive beer!!

I wrote the article and have made it. The longer it ages the more it is apparent that I should have used a less attenuative yeast (e.g. just Fullers yeast) to leave more residual sugar in it, as my clone just isn't sweet enough. Its quite close, but just not over the top sweet.

Dark Lord Clone - help with recipe/technique

Ditto on the hop extract 100 g can for me. About 120-130 ml of extract from one can. I bought a bunch of syringes on Amazon (with screw caps) and made myself a baggie full of 5 ml and 10 ml hop extract syringes to use in DIPAs, other big hoppy beers and high ABV beers that don't need a...

Dark Lord Clone - help with recipe/technique

Your interpretation is correct. If you use a lot of the extract its worth getting it from Yakima Valley Hops, as its really fresh (and greenish), and smells great, while the stuff from NB is really dark and doesn't smell very great (oxidized and old?).

Dark Lord Clone - help with recipe/technique

4 packs in a 3L starter is what I wrote in the BYO recipe, so you should be fine provided your yeast isn't old. I was overly concerned with under attenuation, which didn't turn out to be an issue, and probably pitched a little higher than I needed.

Dark Lord Clone - help with recipe/technique

Ugh, sorry I forgot to mention that in the recipe. It goes in at the start of the boil. I was worried about under bittering the beer, so I put all of it in right at the start, all 50 ml (I brewed this originally as a 20 gallon batch).

FG of Dark Lord is 1.070!?!?!

To make it closer to DL , just the changes I posted in the article. Switch copitch of wlp001/wlp002 to just wlp002 and compensate for lower abv (due to higher fg) by increasing amount of base malt and jaggery. The changes should make it indistinguishable. The consensus from...

FG of Dark Lord is 1.070!?!?!

Hi Michael, The 1.054 was the FG of my clone. When I measured vacuum degassed samples of it for the article both were 1.070. De Garde Brewing has also measured the FG at 1.074. That was me too. My updated user name is Scumbag81.

    2013 NHC first round results?

Got mine from SD, entered 9 beers, 8 had scores from 30-40.5, with one 19 on Flander's Red as I sent it in before it was fully carbed. My Imperial Red with Rye and a lot of NZ, AU and US hops placed 2nd in specialty, 5 others had mini-bos, not did not have place awarded marked, so it looks like...
