Question for other Tower of Power users

I would have to agree with JJFlash. I generally have to set my temp on the controller several degrees higher than the required mash temp. I have 2 thermometers (one has a long stem on it to check deep into the mash...the other is a Thermapen) to monitor the mash temp and I adjust the TOP as...

I added the 1.5 Tbls in boil last year and after fermenting/tasting I added another tsp.

    Stinky bucket question

After washing in PBW if I still have a smell problem, I let the equipment soak overnight in baking soda solution. It always does the trick and you don't have to worry about bleach smell. This works really well with new kegs as well.

    Reaction to Metal Using PBW

I soaked my hop spider in PBW overnight and this white substance formed on the nuts and bolts. I got the hardware at Lowes and it was suppose to be stainless steel. I am not sure now. Has this happened to anyone?

Best way to keep fermentation temperature with new freezer and Johnson controller?

If you tape the probe to the side of the carboy or place it in wort, just remember the freezer will start cooling and will not cycle off until the wort is at the right temp. This causes the temp in the freezer to become much colder (becasue of the lag) than it needs and may end up cooling the...

    Tower of Power

I wrap my mash tun with 4 layers of 4 reflectix while I wait my ten to 15 minutes. The temperature in the mash doesn't really change. The amount of water in the tubing/pump is really insignificant and when I turn my pump back on and start recirculating and fire the burner back up, the mash...

How much PBW do you use to soak a 5 gallon Carboy?

I've always used 1 tsp per gallon as well and it has always worked great.

The 10 minutes allows the grain to absorb the water. I found out the hard way not to skip this step.

    Blichmann Mash/Tun stuck sparge

I have a Blichmann Tower of Power (10 Gal Blichmann Mash Tun) and had a major issue with stuck mashes during recirculation. I corrected the problem after consulting Blichmann and reading the instructions for the TOP by allowing a MINIMUM of 10 minutes AFTER doughing-in (I wait 15 minutes)...

    Problems using my Refractometer

If you take a hot sample of wort (a couple of drops) any evaporation of that sample will cause the reading to be high. I usually put a 2 teaspoon sample in a cool glass for a few seconds until temp is down just a bit and then take a few drops from that sample. You have less evaporation and a...

    The best/fastest chillers... on Earth?!

Somewhat impressive but how long does it take to get the wort down to 68 degrees with 68 degree water? That would be the video I would like to see. My plate chiller can do it in about 5 minutes using about 20 to 25 gallons of water.

    Blichmann Boilermaker Question

I don't think stirring the top layer of your mash is going to be a problem. If you look at Blichmann's Manual for their Autosparge it says: "Tip: We do recommend that you periodically rake the top 1/3 of the mash during lauter about every 15 min to maintain a smooth efficient lauter process...

    sanitizing beer gun

I clean the stainless steel and rubber/vinyl parts in PBW and then use star san to sanitize (using the brushes that came with it to clean inside the tubes). The valve or handle part (which I think is brass) I boil for a few minutes before and then after use. I've done this 15-20 times and it...

    Plate chiller w/ 2.5 G batches

I have chilled 7 gals to 68 deg in about 5 minutes with 68 degree ground water using the Blichmann Therminator. Describe your set up.

The Therminator - love it hate it

You can add pellet hops directly to the BK ( I use a strainer bag for whole hops). My filter has never clogged. The web site I noted above has a video that is worth watching that might answer your questions further.
