I haven't done mead but want to try it this year. I usually cover my carboys with a grocery paper bag and that doesn't seem to affect my temps too greatly.

I have both and am happy. My suggestion would be look to see if they have good Pub discounts in your area. If it is only average I would go with the beersmith now and get the membership later. I usually get my membership renewed every Christmas as it is a good cheap gift.

I became a member as a Christmas gift from my sister in law for the past two years. I like what they do for the world of homebrewing, but I also really like the early ticket sales for the GABF as they sell out faster every year. I also like the idea of the members only session at the GABF.
