    RO with LoDo

I found this link very interesting, I also looked at the wort study they did as well. I was told in the beer making class I took at the LHB store that adding O2 before pitching the yeast was very important. However, I only use dry yeast (US-05 mostly) and according the the Fermentis website ...

    RO with LoDo

I bought a DO test kit and currently doing a test on 3 gallons of RO water. I added 5 grams of bread yeast along with 5 grams of sugar after heating to 100 F. Results so far: DO starting point 2.5 ppm 15 minutes 1 ppm 30 minutes 0 ppm 4 hours 0 ppm 24 hours 0 ppm I'm leaving the pot of water...

    RO with LoDo

RO water has less DO than tap water. Tap water has 7-9 ppm while RO has 2-3 ppm (could even be less), so if you start with RO then your are ahead in the game. If you can get the RO water into the boil pot without splashing too much then the boil should be more effective at removing the...

Interesting - silicone o-rings on kegs allow o2

Was the o-ring test on 100% silicone o-rings? Most that I see on Amazon have "Durable rubber, silicone and hard plastic" in the description, are these better?

Interesting - silicone o-rings on kegs allow o2

I always thought my beer was safe in the keg this but says otherwise if using silicone o-ring on the lid. Test results: https://www.kegland.com.au/cdn/shop/files/KegLand_Oxygen_Transmission_Tests_For_Low2_Keg_O-rings_by_Gunnlab_on_Mocon_Oxtran.pdf

    Asking for speculations

Thanks for all the replies, it gives me some insite. I don't think I will try to recreate his brew.

    Asking for speculations

My grandfather passed in 1963 when I was five years old. He lived in Opelousas Louisiana, which is in south Louisiana, Cajun country. He was a long time home brew guy going back to prohibition time and maybe before, he was a WWI vet and was deployed to the battle fields of France. So anyway...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

I have not had any issues with krausen because there is plenty of head space in the bucket. The part about the math was unrelated to the krausen question, that wasn't very clear in my response. I was adding that I trust that there is enough CO2 to purge the keg being produced based on what...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

Yes, washer on both sides, it was trial and error and I destroyed a couple of lids in the process. Be sure to find a flat and smooth part of the lid to drill the holes, any raised letters or other artifacts will cause issues with the seal. Trust me on this point. I got the idea from the...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

Yes, I tried these first but was not able to get a good seal. The weight of the connections would pull on the post and break the seal. The lids are too flexible for the narrow post. The carbonation caps have a much wider base and hold the seal very well after the connections are in place...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

The krausen has not been a problem, I do 5 gallon batches and the bucket is 7.8 gallons, there is enough head room. After transfering to the keg after about a week I leave at room temp for another week, some times longer, then chill. The keg is more like a secondary fermentation and then cold...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

You are correct, they are carbonation caps. I cut the the tops off a couple of plastic bottles and used that on the inside of the lid to attach the caps. Also needed some large rubber washers on the outside, one per cap, to get a good seal. I tried the cheaper plastic carbonation caps but never...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

I'm jumping in to show my solution to purging kegs with CO2. I use a bucket to ferment to which I added two QD to the lid, one for gas and one for a floating dip tube. I use a plastic hammer to bang the lid onto the bucket to get a good seal. I tested this by putting a few pounds of pressure on...

    Cold Crashing

Seems to me that everyone cold crashes when kegging by just putting the keg in the keezer , but I'm new to home brewing.

    CO2 Flow Meter

To answer your question, no I just set the pressure and it does its thing. But it's something to think about. I just order this exact air flow meter but for a diffent reason. I now purge the keg with C02 from fermentation and will use the meter to measure the C02 flow rate from the fermenter...

How often do you extract brew?

Nice boat! I brewed the extract kit yesterday and saved about one and a half hours. I have done this one several times before I switched to AG so I know what to expect. What's different this time is that I use the C02 from fermentation to purge the keg then do a closed transfer to the keg...

How often do you extract brew?

Thanks you very much for the recipes! My normal all grain brew day is about 5 hours from getting all the equipment ready to final cleaning. There is beer drinking involved so that helps, then into the pool with more beer. But today I have a "honey do list" so a quick extract brew day it will be.

How often do you extract brew?

I started brewing about 18 months ago and started with extract kits from my local brew store then moved to all grain about 8 months ago. My question is for the long time (longer than me) all grain brews is how often, if ever, do you extract brew? I'm brewing an extract this weekend because of...

    Keg purging with active fermentation

Thanks for the sheet it's great! When putting in 25 L it's spot on so maybe there isn't enough CO2 for two kegs? I'm purging a keg using this method right now, the serving keg and the fermenter are both in the fermentation refrigerator looking forward to a great beer.
