    Newbie doing a first build

I've been doing BIAB over my kitchen stove for a couple years now. My wife now wants me out of the kitchen, and I'd like to use a hoist to hang the bag anyhow, so I'm going for the basement. I'm adding a 5500w element from BrewHardware to my existing kettle and I'm planning to use an Arduino to...

Thanks for the input. I'm going to be trying another one soon. I'll definitely try the lower mash temp.

    Abnormal's Adjunct-Ready Imperial Stout Recipe

I had a similar brew day where I got a second beer from the second runnings. However, on the big beer, I ended up with too much unfermentables (I think) and it ended up being almost cloyingly sweet. Would doing the longer mash, and maybe at a lower temp (I did 153) help with that?

    Spent Grains Really Spent?

I recently did a bigger stout (9%), and did a porter with the second runnings by just putting the bag in a second vessel with mash-temp water for about 30 minutes, stirring every now and then and squeezing the bag well. The second runnings gave me what would have been 4%, so I added Molasses to...

    BIAB Troubleshooting Repeatedly Missing FG

As an update, just found a adjustment calculator for my refractometer, and I'm basically right where I should be! Thanks @tripeland

    BIAB Troubleshooting Repeatedly Missing FG

I've been using a refractometer. I didn't know that about giving false FG readings. So I could not really have a problem? I've been mashing at 153 (strike at 161 before grain is added). I just tasted the beer in the fermentor, and actually, it doesn't taste very sweet. I think you might be...

    BIAB Troubleshooting Repeatedly Missing FG

Hi All, I've been a lurker for a long while, but it's time for a post. I recently converted from extract brewing to BIAB. I've done four batches so far (fourth is sitting in the fermentor), and they have each suffered the same fate. I have hit OG each time, or close to it, but I end up only...
