Advice on how to enjoy homebrewing over the years without becoming an alcoholic.

I have a-fib -- “palpitations” and I haven't brewed a batch of beer since before my heart attack on 7/5/23. I was also diagnosed with a-fib and the palpitations I'd experienced for a couple of years prior to that are consistent with that. I had zero alcohol for maybe 5 months but then I tried...

    Need to go electric...

Never finished the post because the page reloaded a couple time while I tired to type! lol Anyway, I wanted to ask wepeeler what condo association would pay for inside unit work?? It’s not like a rental, you own your unit.

    Need to go electric...

I know it’s not the primary topic, but I’m curious. I own a 1 bdrm condo and have lived here (and brewed!) for 8 years. I’ve been involved with my condo board, ran and lost in an election and, sorry to say, pay $600/month in dues. It pays for NOTHING

Lots of grain mush in the wort and scorching

Exactly -- Got a Wilser Bag for my M&B and I've had some fine crushes with no issues.

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

The service you received is not acceptable. However, the last post previous to yours is last August, telling me NB must’ve resolved some issues, so at this point we have no reason to believe they’re back to the rash of customer service and shipping issues that went on for some time. Fingers crossed.

    Brewing cost

I’ve lived in a small 1 bedroom condo for 8 years now and a smallish kitchen. I bought a portable 1800W induction cooktop for $50 ( maybe $100-ish now), placed it on the ceramic cooktop of my electric arove and brewed 5G batches in an 8G with a ball valve and built-in thermometer. I wrapped...

    Mash paddle decision

I’ve got one similar to post #5 and love it. My daughter gave it to me at Christmas maybe 5 years ago so that’s 1/2 the reason I like it. The finish is great — very tight grain and cleans up nicely with a hot water rinse.

    Simplifying brewing

I think this is true depending…. If you’re a high volume brewer, entertain, etc., sure. I brew for myself, 5 gallon batches, and do not share much so bottling is fine — I have a process in place and it’s only 50 bottles. Some of us have limited space so that’s a factor. Mini kegs would maybe be...

Apartment Brewing with Mediocre Stove Top

I started inside with 5 gallon batches using an 1800 watt portable induction cooktop with an 8 gallon SS kettle. I mashed in a 10 gallon Igloo Cooler. My condo electric stove was not adequate but I could use the stove top to place the induction cooker on so I could use that space. 1800 watts...

What’s with all the low mileage secondhand anvil foundry units for sale??

Brewing beer is a hobby some initially get excited about but when they get into it, they find it takes time, trial and error and, well, work (IMO). I think some people get very excited then quickly lose interest - not unusual for some when it comes to any new hobby. The Anvil appears to me to be...

Large Grain Bill Recipe - Limited Grain Capacity

I’ve had the same concern with large grain bills on my M&B. Just my opinion, but I haven’t found a couple of pounds of DME to be detrimental but understand your taste could be more discerning than mine.

    Induction Brewing with 120V

You can brew 1800W induction easily for those batch sizes. I used a portable 1800W induction unit with an 8 gallon kettle to boil 6 gallons. I wrapped the kettle in Reflectix.

I overcarbed and also bottled my beer too early - gushers

IMO, 5.5 days in the fermenter isn’t just a bit too early, it’s way too early. Many here say at least 2 weeks and I’ve found sometimes there’s activity beyond that. My last batch, I saw airlock activity at 11 days and decided to give it 3 but ended up at 4 weeks.

    New Grain Mill

I think thats a good start. I have that mill and adjust it with a credit card as a guide. Some here may cringe at that and tell you to buy a feeler gauge. My efficiency is really good. I use the bag in my Mash&Boil’s malt pipe.

Fat Tire - New Belgium ditches classic recipe

Too bad they just didn’t come up with an entirely new recipe to market to that demographic and have the integrity to keep Fat Tire as is. JMO.

How long should I wait before bottling after I have added the priming solution ?

I stir my priming solution into the bottling bucket but because I’m also concerned with oxygenation, I make it appoint to stir rapidly/thoroughly but without breaking the surface with the stirring spoon so as not to create splashing. I cant say I’ve noticed oxygenation in my beers. I also use...
