    When wheat went wrong

Unfortunately I have no way of testing PH at the moment. I think the keg pressure should be fine, especially if we are making an effort to empty the keg quickly! ;) As for sanitation, I use StarSan on everything. I've had beer in a bucket for over four months before and can't recall any...

    When wheat went wrong

I should have mentioned that I don't have a keezer/kegerator; my bar (avatar pic) stores all 9 of my kegs but it's at whatever the temperature is in my utility room. I have a cooler that chills all four lines that sits behind the shelves at the bottom, so the keg remains at around 18*C, but when...

    When wheat went wrong

Now that's a great idea! I'll cold crash for a week just to try to get a load of the bits to drop out then I'll fill two, maybe three bottles and keg the rest! Yeah, the vodka is 40% russian standard that I've been steadily using in airlocks for the last few years. Strange! Would you recommend...

    When wheat went wrong

good spot! That is indeed a fly. I'm clearly walking around with my eyes shut at the moment! Just tasted it and the spicy notes from the yeast hides any sourness pretty well, it does have a slightly "tangy" flavour to it though. it's certainly not undrinkable at the moment, but is it only going...

    When wheat went wrong

Hi all, I brewed a hefe around four and a half months ago and haven't had the time (or effort) to keg/bottle until now (starting to run low on beer!). The first thing I noticed was the vodka in the airlock no longer reached the level required to completely keep a seal so air/spores etc. could...

Blue beer: lets beat this dead horse

    BIAB mashing in ice chest

Nice. I just leave it all as is, as if it is an actual mash tun. The BIAB for me is essentially just a false bottom and the tap for bottling collects the wort from the bottom. At the time it was the cheapest way for me to move into AG without worrying about the usual worries of BIAB and I...

    BIAB mashing in ice chest

depends on the beer and amount of grain (obviously), but usually about 4 gals then sparge with a further 2ish after collecting first runnings. It's served me well for about 20 batches now without too much of a hankering to upgrade to something better. I'd probably prefer to spend the money on a...

    BIAB mashing in ice chest

I use a BIAB in my bottling bucket with great efficiency. wrap a sleeping bag around it and away you go. 1*C heat loss after 1 hour. just remember to stir the hell out of the mash!

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Ahhhh I see! That makes so much sense. Thanks day_trippr! I'll have a little play around with it tonight. Hopefully it should be fairly straight forward now. ...saying that, I'll probably be back on here with another silly question in a few days! Cheers!

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Incoming british noob alert... My overly excited self bought all I (thought was) needed to start this project... I have finally come to the assembly and have hit a silly snag... my dual relay board does not look like the ones in the schematics diagram... It's certainly similar, but...

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

We're going on holiday tomorrow so SWMBO is at home harvesting my first year Styrian Goldings while I'm at work so we can freeze them before we leave tomorrow. She just sent me this picture. Not sure of the weight yet but I'm chuffed at the volume from one first year plant!

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Wow, some of yours are looking great already! I bought three rhizomes this year; Fuggles, Styrian Goldings and Cascade. Unfortunately the fuggles one didn't take, but I've left it in the pot just in case it decides to miraculously take to the soil next year! The modest looking one on the left...

Anyplace to grab a beer in Paris?

JKaranka, how was your trip? I'm going to France for the Euros in two weeks so I'm keen on finding some great places to eat/drink in quite a few different cities.

French Bars/Restaurants worth visiting during Euro 2016

So, I'm going to Euro 2016 in France with a small group of friends, and we will be visiting a number of cities over two and a half weeks: Marseille, Lyon, St. Etienne, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille (for a game in Lens). So my question to you beer heads is: can any of you recommend some...

Crafty Dan - 13 Guns American IPA

I see! I don't know why I didn't make that connection before. It's standard practice for most foodstuffs in terms of putting the main contributors first etc. I like the look of your malt bill etc. I think I'll have to give this a go. It looks much less daunting now I can see a recipe that looks...

Crafty Dan - 13 Guns American IPA

Ozark, That looks like a great starting point, thanks! So you think that centennial is probably the best bet for the main source of bittering rather than Apollo as Redlantern had suggested? I'm yet to use either hop so I'm not very well placed to make a decision either way! With the Amarillo...

Crafty Dan - 13 Guns American IPA

Thanks for all the interest and input! JKaranka, you're right, it is also very malty, I find it incredible how well balanced it is; it makes me quite nervous even attempting a clone. There must be so much trial and error with this, I imagine it will be very easy to overdo it. Redlantern...
