DC Area Group Grain Buy #23

At this point I can add another sack. I think @murphyslaw might be right that some of the older orders might be stale. Perhaps starting over would be a good idea.

I'll probably close some splits once I figure out what I'll be brewing.

Will this cheap 3500 watt induction burner work?

Happy to say I just completed my water test, and everything seems to be working. I was able to heat 2.5 gal to over 160 F in what seemed like a short amount of time (I forgot to time it). One hiccup along the way was that I had the electrician add the outlet before I had the burner, because I...

Will this cheap 3500 watt induction burner work?

It took me forever, but I have read through this entire thread. Thanks everyone for the great info! I'm ready to pull the trigger and order the Avantco IC3500. I'm talking to electricians now about getting an outlet wired up in my basement. I want to get something that will work with the...

    Cool Brewing Insulated Fermentation Bag

I have one of these and it works well for temp control when fermenting. If it is empty when I am brewing, I often put it over my mash tun (which because I BIAB is a 10 gal brew kettle) to help maintain the temp. This is super helpful in the colder months.

Looking for opinions on burners (Darkstar, Darkstar 2.0, SQ14)

I had a terrible experience with a DarkStar - no matter how I adjusted it, it always left lots of black char on my kettle. This was a huge pain to clean up. I upgraded to the Bru Burner, which initially gave me problems with the flame going back into the Venturi tube. I've mostly fixed this...

    American style tea

I know lots of folks that are tea snobs and much prefer tea to coffee. I am one of them. Things I try to avoid: - Tea bags: Whenever possible, I use loose leaf. - Adding tea to water: That is just wrong. Hot water should be poured over the tea - Lipton or similar: These are the Budweisers of tea

    Marris Otter/Cascade SMaSH

Very similar to a MO/Citra SMaSH I did recently that turned out very nicely. I second what @kev211 said about doing a dry hop though.

    Question for parents that brew

My 13 year old son and 12 year old daughter will help when asked and can be quite useful. I only started brewing a year ago, so they were 12 and 11 at the time. Back when I used to bottle, my daughter loved being in charge of the capping. Neither has expressed any interest in sampling the...

Brew in a Basket...anybody try one of these?

I bought one of these baskets recently and used it for the first time on Saturday. I've done 10+ batches using a bag, and the main problem I had was while lifting the bag out, there were a couple seconds where wort would spill out over the sides of the kettle. Not a big deal, but something I...

    Inactive Starter with WLP655

Thanks Revvy and mkeckjr. The vial was best before June-2016 and I did have a band of yeast on the bottom, so hopefully all is well. I pitched it today, so we'll see. As for not doing a starter with this blend, I learned this shortly after I did the starter. Alas. After a couple weeks in the...
