Soaking oak in bourbon vs beer; are there differences?

I do it separately. Add oak until you like it. Then add bourbon to taste. Easier to control with the two separate

Soaking Oak Chips in Bourbon for Secondary

I’ve had good results adding the two separately. I add the oak cubes (after boiling them in water for a couple minutes) until it’s what I want. Then add the bourbon until that’s what I want. Breweries can’t add alcohol to beer. Home brewers can. Another advantage of home brewing.

Need Ideas For an HLT Stirrer.

My temp probe is fixed four inches from the bottom and I don’t drain the whole volume. It’s 15 gallons on 240 volts. Stirring the first time drops the temp 3 or 4 degrees. I stir until the temp stops dropping, about 20 seconds. It takes a couple minutes to come up to the set point. The second...

Need Ideas For an HLT Stirrer.

The temperature in mine also stratifies. I use a long spoon and stir it twice when my temp controller shows the set point. After the second stir it’s at/nearly at the set point 💪 🥄

Will soaking oak cubes in bourbon in advance reduce necessary contact time with beer?

What I have done is add oak chunks / chips and sample until it’s where I want. Then add the bourbon to taste From what I understand commercial brewers can’t add liquor to beer, so that’s why they put beer in bourbon barrels instead of adding the two separately. Another process advantage of...

    Bourbon barrel storage and preparation

Dang. I put in 1.75 L of Jim Beam today and will roll it around a few times per week to coat the inside and hopefully keep it water tight

    Bourbon barrel storage and preparation

Two days ago I picked up a 15 gallon oak bourbon barrel that was emptied the day before. I understand that keeping some bourbon in it will keep it watertight and ready for filling. Correct? Is 750 ml enough to do the job? I hope to fill it within eight weeks.

    Five Star Beer stone remover

I used it undiluted at room temperature for 10 minutes. Wearing a glove I would take a BS remover soaked paper towel and scrape the spot after 10 minutes. Then let it dry and wipe with star san soaked cloth. Repeat as needed

    Five Star Beer stone remover

I have had some spots that required three applications of full strength BS remover to clean. I followed the instructions of letting it dry, then sanitizing, each time.

    Another sanke fermenter

The hole for the corny lid (I’m sure that’s what you meant but just to be clear the corny lid was not cut - only the legs that secure it were cut shorter) was made with a plasma cutter and smoothed with a die grinder. It is an air tight seal. When fermenting with a blow off tube or airlock there...

    Another sanke fermenter

I use mine right side up with an orange carboy cap on the opening. There is a corny hole cut beside it, I use the kind of lid that has a gas post. To transfer I’ll put a racking cane through the large hole of the cap, plug the small hole of the cap and push the beer out with CO2 through the...

    buying a pump

I have the chugger and it's noisy. I'm replacing it with a topsflow TD5 which is reportedly much quieter. But I don't have it yet so can't confirm. https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/topsfloss.htm

Reusing a cleaning station (for occasional bottling)?

I make my Starsan with distilled water and it does not turn cloudy or have any precipitate. I make 5 gallons and pour the unused back into the gallon distilled water containers.
