    First Recipe Advice (Amber Ale)

So I just tried my hand at designing me first recipe using Brewtoad, as it was the easiest for me to follow so far. https://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/honey-amber-28 Honey Amber an Extract, American Amber Ale by mythbustingpyro Fermentables Efficiency: 75.0 % Batch size: 1.0 gal...

First Kit, and a few mistakes

So I made my first extract kit (smashing pumpkin small batch) a couple days ago and thought Id share a few mistakes I made. These were the instructions: http://www.northernbrewer.com/documentation/beerkits/SmashingPumpkin_ONEGALLON.pdf I steeped the supplied specialty grain while I brought my...

What's the advantage to bulk aging?

Is there a significant advantage to bulk aging vs bottle conditioning or split aging? I have a 5 gal BOMM that Im about to rack or bottle. Im splitting off 2 of the gallons to experiment with (one pineapple, one bacon). Should I buy a 3 gal carboy for the other 3? Or would I be fine splitting...

    Bread grinder for biab?

Before I go buying a bunch of whole grains, can a nutrimill grinder be used for biab. From what I've been reading most biab brewers try to get close to a flour, which is what this mill grinds to. Can I get by with this for a while or do I need to get my own corona asap.

Bayou Classic vs Tallboy for BIAB

I have decided that I want to just go ahead and get a decent stainless kettle instead of the cheapest aluminum kettle I can find. I would really like to do BIAB for the simplicity of it, with no tun or extra sparging. I am between this 44 quart Bayou Classic (with a basket)...

Ultra Cheap 3L drafting trial advice

Hello, I am working on figuring out an ultra cheap, kegging alternative for light temporary use, does anyone see a glaring reason that this wouldn't work before I order the components? I make mostly 1 gallon batches and really like variety and experimentation and I'd like to be able to draft my...

I may have infected my wine somehow

I started a batch of the potato wine from the wine recipe database. Its a 3 gallon batch (in a 5 gallon bucket). I let it had to let it cool overnight before pitching the yeast, and didn't get to it for a couple days. When I picked up the lid it had an inch or two layer of foam and smelled...

    Another kettle question

After finding out my biggest pot currently is a 1.5 gallon instead of a 2 gallon, Im looking at kettle options. Im not seeing a big difference in price between aluminum and stainless, but they seem expensive for just a pot. Im having trouble paying over 30 for what boils down to a really big...

    Yeast comparison experiment

I just started 4 different 1 gallon batches of hard cider to compare different yeasts for my and my gfs tastes. I used pasteurized and infiltered local cider bought from the ingles (one of our grocery stores). All the jugs had the same sg of 1.040. The first one is using saf-ale (05 I think)...

3 universal label options and in need of suggestions

I took a night a while back and drew up three potential labels to either be printed out or hand-etched on my bottles (mostly wine and a few swingtops currently). I am a huge Dune fan, and my name being Paul, I just couldn't resist. I am also planning on doing tied on neck tags for each...

    Ingredients to keep onhand

Hello, I am trying to make the break from wines, meads, and ciders to ar least extract brewing. I want to spend some money on a brewing "pantry". I'm kind of lost on where to start. What kinds of extract and malts should I keep. Which hops are most prevalent. I'm going to start a yeast bank...

New to beer, from Western North Carolina

Hello all, finally joined up and wanted to give a little information about me, where brewing is concerned. Born and raised in the mountains of North Carolina (Hendersonville specifically) started brewing a tiny bit around a year ago, only doing wines, ciders and meads. I started only using...
