How long should I keep my primary under temp control?

How do I get on that Christmas list? The Hefe from my experience will ferment the fastest. the 3068 is a beast and you will def need a blowoff tube. I typically don't brew IPAs...so no experience there. Also, I typically control temp for the first few days of fermentation then move to room...

might be time for a bigger mash tun

Were you able to stir the mash during conversion. I found that if I give a good stir every time I check temp, I get much better conversion. If you are going to make bigger beers more often, then think about upgrading. You could easily use your current mash tun as an HLT and upgrade to a 10...

Igloo vs. rubbermaid false bottom compatibility

No experience with false bottom other than neighbor and brew teacher forgetting to put his in during double brew day. I personally have the igloo, but use a stainless braid hose. I have a t fitting and connect the hose on both ends to the t.

best way to mix priming sugar with beer?

I had similar issues in my first batch. was really bummed bc all samples tasted great. my process was to add a 3/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water, boil, cool, add to bottling bucket then bottle. One thing I do now is give it time in the bottling bucket after racking onto the sugar solution. here...

    Rice hulls & sparge calcs

Also depends on your equipment. I've done a hefe with no rice hulls and 60% wheat. But i have a stainless hose in the mash tun. with 7lb pils you should be good, just dough in the pils first. if you are inclined to use rice hulls, you can soak them overnight so you wouldn't have to worry...

Upgrading to all grain. Looking for lessons learned

just do it. a few things i do to make my day easier. 1) set up all all equipment the day before, test for leaks. 2) gather water day before. 3) have check list of ingredients and procedure day of. 4) have fun. 5) have a brew(typically after boil)

Does this look like Brett contamination?

wow, never seen that much sediment even in sours. you may want to post a little more detail on your processes. You may have just bottled before the beer was ready to bottle and fermentation complete.

    Being broke and a homebrewer

Just made apfelwein recently. $12 for the case of sams choice juice and $1 for the yeast. The only brew I've done that was less was when I received 30% off at lhbs and picked up all ingredients for at hefe for about $10. Maybe volunteer at lhbs shop or up and coming brewery in exchange for...

    Brewing in Southern California

I pretty much had an octoberfest in mind when putting together my keezer. Thought it would be nice to be able to lager and serve at the same time. but those plans didn't really work out but I do like the compact nature of the 7cuft.

    Summer ales

sounds like a good recipe. Best hefe I made this past year was 60/40 wheat to Pils. Used 1 0z hallertau at 60, but added about 3 oz of fresh sour orange zest at 5 mins. Did the same recipe w/o the zest and was just a bit too sweet.

    Brewing in Southern California

One word of advice, go with the 12 cuft if you can. esp if you plan to ferment and serve out of the same keezer. I just put mine together with a 7cuft and cannot serve and ferment at the same time because of space without building a collar. My neighbor also brews and does not temp control...

    Saisons and age

I believe one gravity point = .004. So you would be looking at .38 Vol CO2 for a drop from 1.007 to 1.004. Please let me know if I'm off base here.

    Saisons and age

my last saison with wlp 565 finished at 1.004. I don't think .003 of additional fermentation will create bottle bombs. If you bottled when it was 1.020 or 1.015, then you would have an issue. I bottled with about 5 oz of regular cane sugar so it would be a little more carbonated than say a...

    Best Grain Mill

I'm using a corona style mill. I also use my neighbors barley crusher when we have a double brew day. Found the efficiency is very similar. There are ways to correct issues with the varying gap size on these mills by straightening the grinding plates and locking it down with jbweld and a...

    Best Grain Mill

There are many threads on adjusting the corona mill allowing a drill to drive it. Just saw one that used jbweld and a screw replacing the the pin that holds one of the plates and a bolt to replace the handle. For the amount of grains I process, corona style was the mill for me.
