Hot side tubing alternatives to silicone.

What about corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) Duda Diesel sells it in custom lengths and it's flexible, though not like silicone.

Mash Tun with Hot Water Element under False Bottom

Not with a cooler, but a false bottom on SS nuts above an element is exactly what my brew kettle is. Old school brewers had no problems installing boil elements into brew buckets and you won't be boiling in the MLT I think you'd have to carve out a bit of the cooler to get at that inner lining...

Waking up to mash tun at strike temp

There was a very similar discussion here recently: Some of those are more kludgey than you may want. I picked up an Auberin DSPR320 just for the opportunity to have a delayed start.

Going to be in DC... food/beer suggestions?

If you're by the convention center neighborhood (Chinatown/Penn Quarter) you may want to hit Brasserie Beck. They have a huge selection of Belgians that aren't available elsewhere. RFD and Brickskeller (same owners) have a very large selection but you'll be able to find those beers elsewhere...

    Rfd Happy Hour~

Damn, I had to miss it at the last minute. I hope ya'll tore up RFD and left "HBT" tagged on the bar.

Another Vote For Plastic instead of glass - Pics

Yambor44 - You could try this setup (or something similar) NB is calling it their Vintage Shop Plate Filter System It looks like it's just a set of plate filters hooked up to a hand-pumped pressure tank. It's probably not the easiest way to filter the wine but it's got to be simpler than a...

    Rfd Happy Hour~

I can probably make it over to RFD next wednesday if ya'll are willing to expand to non-MD brewers. And if you were, you could drop a line to the DC Homebrewing club and you might find a few more takers. :mug:

    Iodophor lasting power

There's a chemist on here somewhere who can tell us why but Iodophor doesn't last once mixed up the way the acid-based sanitzers can. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/what-sanitisers-cleaners-used-43688/ Edit: See above :)

    lighting dimmers for element control?

I'm curious. Between you and Pol I may end up with an electric brewery before the weather gets nice.

    BLING BLING Electric HERMS Conversion

HAH! Yes, I should have added that I do not intend to use your personal narrative as a set of instructions. Should I subsequently impersonate a lightning rod it is totally unrelated.

    BLING BLING Electric HERMS Conversion

I've following the other electric heating threads and wanting to do the same. Thanks for taking the plunge and writing it up.

    Beginning AGAIN With Cider...

As far as cider concentrate goes NORTHERN BREWER: Wine Ingredients it's halfway down the page. Some googling suggests that it's a cider apple blend but I can't find the supplier's page. This guy has a pretty good run down on the whole process. Lost Meadow Orchard and Cidery, Calais VT ...

Commercial ciders at the local store...

Well, my tasting notes for Duchess are sort of scrawled down the side of my notebook. I'm only 80% sure it's english. Brasserie Beck has that effect. That's why I'm looking for another bottle :D I remember it as a very gentle sour beer with a surprisingly full body and lots of personality. But...

    Bottling a still cider question

I think Russb is refering to https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f35/oxygen-absorbing-caps-89570/ which do have a different composition than regular caps and do absorb oxygen when they get wet. Even if you prime the bottles the oxygen in the headspace won't be driven off nor will the yeast...

    Beer for the woman

I haven't seen any but the only things you would need from the LHBS are yeast and pectic enzyme. That first batch of cider can be even easier than a kit wine. After that the fun is in making it complicated :D . If she likes her wines super-dry and light bodied then you should also give...

    Beer for the woman

You could try a basic cider recipe. It won't be ready as quickly as a hefeweizen but if you don't bump your OG up too much it could be ready to drink within a couple months. I listened to and then shamelessly followed the Jamil Show episode on Standard Cider The Brewing Network.com - The...
