Towel under lid to absorb DMS?

thanks pwnshop. I do similar indoor boils and have used the same "lid halfway" strategy. As for the towel strategy, i've kegged the original beer: Northern Brewer's all grain La Petite Orange. This beer has a base malt of pilsner (7lb for a 5 gal recipe). Without any late addition hops to...

Towel under lid to absorb DMS?

Hey pwnshop: this is interesting. I'm downsizing back to my 20 quart aluminum kettle on an indoor gas stove. So you keep the lid halfway on? (I've even read that pilsen malts can be the culprit of high DMS taste) Also, what volume boils are you doing? I've been able to get 3.5 gallons of wort...

Towel under lid to absorb DMS?

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify: I ended up doing this experimental batch in a 1650 W electric turkey fryer. As a lot of you said, the heat stick makes most logical sense here, a lot of other forums mention needing an additional heat source for electric turkey fryers (although turkey...

Towel under lid to absorb DMS?

Hello all, I'm using a kitchen stove for boiling wort because of a late work schedule during dark winter months. Usually I use propane outdoors. Anyway, I've been reading about DMS that dissipates from wort during the boil. Since my stovetop doesnt seem to hold a rolling boil without the lid...

    Brewers Best Smoked Porter

Just want to share my (very noob) experiences with this kit. I ended up dry-hopping this with some leftover hops from my Double Ipa (Cascade). I figured, why waste hops when I can just dump them into my smoked porter? WRONG!! I ended up having a harsh, spicy, almost offensive Cascade taste, and...

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

You're right, very well put. I was definitely venting and anxious when i first titled this thread. Glad it all worked out in the end though, and maybe folks in similar situations can read through this forum, be proactive and communicative, and keep homebrewing going in apartments!!

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

JUST HEARD BACK, and here's the solution! Moved to the closet, with a huge rubber-bottom carpet. Blankets on hand to keep everything insulated. I can close the closet doors to keep it all out of sight. P.S. the Double IPA is in secondary now, and I just washed the glass carboy after harvesting...

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

Hey everyone, thanks a bunch for the help. I just got home and am waiting to hear back from my landlord. A few people asked for my side of communication in this, so I'll attach my e-mails. The first one was apologizing for the Propane tank in the basement. The second one was just trying to...

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

Yea, i definitely messed up with the propane tank. Nothing in the lease about alcohol. But I agree that I should try to keep the peace and keep my homebrew setup looking clean and streamlined however I can.

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

I sent her an email saying how i homebrew for family/friend birthday gifts, holiday gatherings, etc. The weird thing about our basement as a "common area" is that it is simply storage space. Our basement is huge, three rooms. The first room is empty except for the water heater & miscellaneous...

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

I think I'll go ahead and move it into my closet, so that it's "out of sight, and out of mind" Thanks for the positive suggestion: "Brew more beer! with temperature-appropriate yeast" I just hope to go about it in a respective way so that my landlord doesn't get angry again

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

That's definitely a possibility. I could move them to my closet and close the doors. The only problem is that the closet temperature is about 55 degrees, whereas the basement is 65 (ideal for the double IPA w/ Wyeast American Ale)

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

By the way, it's a 20 pound propane tank, not a 40 pound propane tank. Don't know if this helps...

HELP! My landlord is a home-brew hater

Hello all, I could use some advice from the peanut gallery. I live in a three-unit apartment with an unfinished basement (brick walls and cement floors). I just expanded my brew setup to include a Blichmann Propane burner, and I made the mistake of storing the propane tank in the basement. My...

HELP! Creating my first extract recipe

Howdy all! I brewed this up on Friday, and the whole brewing process went well. I made a few changes to the recipe though: -full 60 minute boil -All of the malt extract was added at the beginning of the boil (adding took about 12 minutes to fully stir, and I didn't start the boil timer until...
